Gen5 2005 Camry with possible major engine failure

This morning i was going to check all of my fluids because the past few days it had some hard starts. When i checked my coolant it was fairly low. Then i went to check my oil and there was too much oil in it when there was perfect amount last time i checked. But today my oil has a reddish tint today. And i realize that the coolant is red and i am low on coolant. This obviously means that there is a leak some ware in the system. But where should i start looking?

I forgot to mention it is the 2AZ-FE for those of you that don't know me.

Possibly a head gasket leak, which is allowing coolant to get into the oil. Is there moisture on the top of your oil cap?

Also, is your car showing colored tail smoke?? That would also indicate coolant in the oil.

To find out if coolant in there put a drop of your oil on the manifolds of any car (especially if you don't want to run this one) if it bubbles and then disipates you have water in there. If it just smokes and no bubbles then there is no water in the oil. Coolant has some amount of water.

like the other two gentleman said, most likely a headgasket leak.

if your under 60K miles, toyota has a power-train warranty of major components like such. Go to them, you may have to pay incidental parts (shouln't amount to more than 50 bucks at the most). Good luck!

ok...i went to my Toyota dealer and they checked it out. They were trying to tell me that it was the oil when i just had it changed 900 miles ago so they gave me an oil change free of charge.....i am going to be watching my oil level and color like a hound. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Honestly, why milage are you at? if your close to 60K miles (but not over it), you really need to realize your still under warranty and they could be doing such to buy additional time!

I think a pressure test on your cooling system would be in order! Coolant in the oil would give you a milky looking substance in the oil someplace not a red color even though the coolant is red.

Thats true, but remember it only does that when a lot of water gets into the oil. My last Chevy did just that, I didn't see it milky until a very noticable amount of water was getting into the oil (so much where it overheated).

i just hit 13,000 miles this afternoon.

OK i got everything figured out now....the dealer had the oil tested and it turns out that the stupid Mexican mechanics somehow put in some transmission fluid in with the oil.....i just noticed it today because i checked the oil when the car wasn't in the garage so the light from the sun made it visible. No more Toyota dealers for me.

Oil Change

If I understand you correctly you had the oil changed about 900 miles ago by a Toyota dealer. Then you had this oil problem and you took it back to a dealer (same dealer ?) and they told you it had half engine oil and half transmission oil in it. Is that correct? If this is true and a dealer did this and admitted it I would talk to the Factory Rep for your area and demand at the very least an extended warranty of 100,000 miles and I would make them pay for an oil analysis every 5 to 10,000 miles. I can't really tell from your post if the oil change 900 miles ago was from the dealer or not. Also, did the oil get changed again by a dealer and he gave you a free oil change and that was the one that got the half and half??? If the bad mix was in it for 900 miles I would make someone do something. If it was just in there for a few days that is better, but I would still try to get something out of them for future problems.

Mike
