5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My new 2007 Camry has the Navigation System option. Since I've been using Garmins since they first came out, I've had to adjust my GPS thought process to address this new system in the way it demands you communicate with it. In three weeks' of use, I'm almost comfortable with its' use - but still miss the straight forward nature of my old Garmin. However, after using the system for a while, a couple functionality quesitons still bother me:
Can you turn off the "moving vehicle lock out mode"? Hey, when my wife is driving, I want to play with the system. However, the system is programmed to operate in nanny-mode, disabling most functionality if the vehicle is moving. Well, what about the passenger? Is there a secret key combination that allows users to retain full functionality?
What about other DVD's? Numerous other vehicle systems allow you to play DVD's through the nav system when the car is parked, but Toyota's manual doesn't address this. Can this system do this? Maybe I should just pop in a movie DVD and see what happens...

No and No to your questions.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Sorry, there is no way that you can play movies through the navigation. I tried that on my sisters Avy, no workie. I'm not exactly sure about how to turn off the Vehicle in motion lock. I think you have to go and buy some thing. I think someone turned theirs off in their Lexus over at Club Lexus.
Here's a link that describes how to accomplish this on a Highlander/Prius/RX400h - with a similar NAV system. While they couldn't tell me how to do this on an '07 Camry, I'm certain that there is a way to do this. If I discover it using variations of the instructions linked above, I'll post it here.
I followed the instructions on this page at Wikihow.com - and was able to drive around the block with all functions enabled! Now, I can let my wife drive, and I can play with the system to my heart's content.
I have an 05 Avalon with a toggle and button NAV System rather than the touch screen system mentioned on these sights. Where can I go to get instructions on how to disable the motion lock-out?
Thank You
Wow I didn't know they had systems that lock you out while you drive now. heh.

1. Get to the volume screen
2. Press the speaker icon in the top left of the screen.
3. Then press the bottom left corner of the screen
4. Press the speaker icon for the second time
5. Press the bottom left corner for the second time and the service screen should appear.
6. Now press the "Override" button until it beeps and highlights.
7. That's it, you may now use ALL Dest buttons while the vehicle is moving!
BTW, did anyone notice the telephone voice button below the override button?
Also if you go into the documented service screen, there's a BT Setup Screen that's greyed out. I wonder if this could be a cell phone interface for bluetooth-enabled phones. If so, I'll bet it's a software upload.
In addition: There are aftermarket companies that market a plug in module that allows dvds to be played through this system with the systems own soft keys. Search them on the internet.
that's so retarded... why wouldn't they make the navigation dvd playable? i mean it reads dvd and there's a lcd screen... that doesn't make sense to me..

Marc
Worked great for me too.
Next Question: Is there a way to make it permanent? So you don't have to go thru this process each time the car is turned on?

This is just a guess...but I'd say it call comes down to money:
1). A unit capable of playing DVD's costs more
2). If it were deemed a contributing factor in an accident (no matter how small), $$$$$
True, the 2001+ Land Cruiser has this, but the Toyota 800- number swears that this unit is not capable of similar functionality. If anybody out there finds out differently, please let me know.

Searching right now. Sorry I didn't see this earlier, but was reading from the bottom up.
