07 tire sensors /wheel, tire package?

07 Camry's are standard with Direct tire pressure monitor system (tire air pressure monitors). What do I need to do when ordering and installing custom aftermarket wheel / tire package. Will the valve stems need to be changed out with my car's original valve stem by a tire store?

What I had to do was write down ALL the numbers on the Tire Monitor. This was incase I needed the Dealership to reset the monitors and NOT take off the tires then charge me for it.

We ended up just puting the monitors back as exactly as we found them...the monitors did not go off. Ahhh....New Rims seem to be working perfectly with them.

So, if I order a tire and wheel package that arrives mounted and balanced, I will need to unmount my stock wheels with sensors, unmount my new tires and wheels, transfer the sensors, and remount and balance again?

Basically ...YES! The sensor is only part of the valve stem. They are just a RF transmitter on the end of it. Also they cost around $125.00 a piece if you break it. Or in my case adding snow tires to my steel wheels. Means I am going to have to purchase 4 more of these.

How do these sensors work? Are powered and if so, by what? A battery? If it's a battery, then how long do they last and can they be replaced?

I would love to have some nice chrome rims, but it seems like its gonna be expensive. The rims and tires are already enough to pay for. I definitly want a professional installing these sensors.

If you don't have them you will get a dash light. The manual does lead me to believe that if they aren't present it won't trip the light but a discussion with another member here said that wasn't the case with him. He got the light.

I just bought a set of SE wheels and the guy left them in, I currently have a dash light but just need to go by the dealer to have them regestered with the ECU.

There may be an option

I think there may be a way to set the TPM system into "sleep" mode or turn it off entirely. I'll have to read the shop manual to be sure.

No, but I used to be a Master Certified ASE technician.

There may be a way to disable the system in the computer. Another option would be to pull the fuse if it's a dedicated system, or as a last resort you remove the instrument cluster and take out the indicator bulb. I did the same thing on my old Chevy Lumina for the "low Coolant" warning lamp. The level was fine and it wasn't worth fixing the sensor, so pull the bulb and the problem goes away.... You deny the system's ability to annoy you.

Take a look at the attached TSB, it doesn't spell out how to deactivate the system but it does mention "operation stop (sleep mode)" as a stored code. In other words there might be an avenue to turn the system off, or you simply pull the plug on the whole thing.

I've just ordered a complete set of 2007 shop manuals for my new Avalon, I'll read up on it and see what can be done.

Some people here have posted that if you install (4) new tires & wheels (rims) w/o the Tire pressure monitoring sensors that the indicator on the dash would stay off...as fault would not be reported. Hopefully someone can back me up on this....I am going to be getting some new wheels myself for my Camry CE and want to be sure of this before I jump in and make a fool of myself !!!

Most tire places don't like fiddling with TPMS ; they (tire guys) are usually rough ; I've asked a couple of places and they almost don't want to touch your vehicle ; or jack up the prices beyond what's reasonable !!!

Also, what's a reasonable wheel size to look for?? My guess is look for 16" x 7" (or 16" x 6.5") wheels with 5 x 114.3 mounts and a 40mm offset. Is there anything else to consider when buyin' wheels?? I would hate the calipers to be touching the wheel interior that would require a spacer or something....in short, I want to keep the same tires (P215/65 R16) that came with the CE but get new wheels...

I guess you could check that theory by jacking up the car, removing the tires and wheels and placing them far enough away from the car. Then turn on the ignition and see if the light comes on. You're effectively doing the same thing as placing non-TPMS wheels on the car without actually laying down money. See if that works.
