Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
How do I hook up my IPOD? Do I need any adapters or kits?
You can plug your iPod into the AUX input with a simple stereo mini plug cable -- essentially a "hadphone plug" on each end. Then, you put your radio on the AUX input, turn up the volume, and head out on the road. Of course, you'd be controlling everything via the iPod, not the car's head unit -- except for volume. You could probably power your iPod with some kind of car power unit, as there's one of those "power ports" right by the AUX input jack in the console box. There might well be aftermarket kits that would allow your iPod to be plugged into the back of your head unit and that would allow it to integrate with your head unit and steering wheel controls, but that info is a bit beyond my knowledge....
I was trying out the AUX port myself with my MP3 player. Great thing is that the Camry has separate volume for each device (CD, FM, AM and AUX). So I don't have to change my MP3 player's volume on and off the Camry.
Having said that, I think it sound much better if I crank up the volume on my MP3 player instead of the volume on Camry.
Anyone else have a problem with sound/quality when using the AUX port? I plug in and I have to put the player up to 100% and the stereo up to about 40 to hear it normally and then there is a whistle...
is it suppose to be like that?
problem with car?
problem with wire?
problem with device?

I'd generally suspect "cranking up your player 100%" -- usually, that would lead to distortion. I'd back that down a bit, and crank the stereo up a bit more. Shouldn't be the car, could be a problem with the cable if you've got a real cheapie one -- there are better-quality ones to be found. Device would seem to be the problem here, mainly because you've got it cranked up full blast. Again, back that down, and see what happens!

try adjusting your ipods volume to about 75% and then adjust the volume on the stereo from there, for the best sound possible

Currently there is nothing available. The main problem (at least in my case) is most times the iPod/OEM radio integration is done via an external cd-changer control/plug. My Camry w/NAV has an internal 4CD so I don't think I could 'unplug' the changer and use it's input/control for my iPod.
If we keep bugging the likes of USASpec, maybe they will put something intelligent together.

Boy, I am no expert on this stuff, but seems I've read about stuff that'll let you have the iPod, and all of your Nav/CD changer stuff, too. You might start here:
I had two devices that I wanted to hook up...first was my tomtom 910 that has mp3 capabilities + the nav, so I tried that first and the quality was not there at all, so I didn't even try the ipod
after reading that the charging while playing might cause distortion I tried the ipod and it works/sounds great...and the tomtom does too (without charging)...
