Gen6 Can I upgrade my stock 2007 stereo?

Does anyone else think their stock 2007 stereo sounds "tinny"? Perhaps I should have given the JBL stereo option more consideration before buying my car, but it is what it is.

Can someone make some upgrade suggestions? I'd prefer to keep the clean look of the existing radio dash. Is the issue with my speakers, or is the radio just weak? Is there some way to upgrade the system without replacing the look of the front? Is there an after-market JBL upgrade?

HELP!?!? Thanks!

I've spoken to Scosche and Metra and neither are working on a radio installation kit for the 07 Camry at the Current time

It would have to be custom, which i've thought of, I went to my wife's Dad Auto Interior shop and it was hard to get a paint match for the interior radio trim pieces, so I scrapped that idea...

i traded in my mustang for my camry and left my speakers in it. at first i wasn't pleased w/ the quality of the sound, but my hubby did some tweaking w/ the settings and it's decent for now.

i bet it will be a couple more months before places start to sell aftermarket head units & speakers for the 07. crutchfield has some, but everything is a modified fit and speakers aren't available on their website yet. here's what they say installation of a CD player:

Modified Fit - Requires Modification
Installation Details for your 2007 Camry
» Caution! You will need to modify your vehicle to install this product. We strongly recommend contacting a Crutchfield Sales Advisor to discuss your installation and your options. Modifications may include cutting wires, plastic, or metal, and may include fabricating brackets, panels, or other parts, and the installation instructions or guides we may be including do not cover these modifications. Once your vehicle has been modified, it may not be possible to return it to the factory specs or appearance. » You will need to fabricate a mounting kit in order to install your new receiver. » If the factory radio is replaced, the factory AUX input connection will be lost. » If your vehicle is equipped with a factory hands-free cell phone interface, it will be lost if the radio is replaced. » You'll get free lifetime tech support for as long as you own your gear!

Gen6 Upgrade your speakers

I purchashed my '07 Camry about 5 weeks ago. You are right, the sound of the stock stereo system is rough, but the problem isn't the head unit. This unit more than likely is produced by Fijutsu Ten (producer of the Eclipse line of car stereo equipment). I just changed out my speakers with a set of Memphis audio 15-MSQ6 components and a pair of 15-MC92s. The cost was $650, but the sound is a whole lot richer that stock. There are lower end speakers that can be purchased, but I feel that you wouldn't want to go lower. Also, for more punch think about adding a 4 ch amp to this setup. To have more control over the sound you could also install an eq to help out the whole system. The great part is that you don't have to do everything at the same time. The bottom line, don't try changing out the head unit. I did it in my '05 camry and never liked the way the replacement unit looked. I hope this helps.

LOXELYLOVE- can you please describe the installation of the Memphis audio speakers on your '07 Camry? I have been told by crutchfield that there is no chance of getting aftermarket speakers to fit in the 07 Camry's stock speaker locations. They say the mounting depths won't work. Did you have any fitment problems? Did you do the install yourself? Thanks for any info you can offer!

Gen6 Re:

I took the car in to a pro installer in my area (use a small shop instead of a large electronics store because they will usually explain and allow you to see how the work is done). My understanding is that the only thing they had to fab was a spacer/mount for the front door speakers since I didn't replace them with 6x9s. Everything else fit w/o any issue. The fit issue I'm sure would come in if you decided to put 6x9s in the door. I used 6" round component speakers since the mounting depth was a little less.

My first post here...it might as well be a worthy one. I recently was interested in the acura tsx and did research on their sound system which I think could be applied to the camry. I come from a toyota family and I am currently driving a 4runner. I plan on getting the new camry instead of the tsx so thats why I joined. Anyway heres an idea. I found this over in the tsx forums...some company called avincar makes speakers that drop into and work with the factory acura system. Maybe we can get them to do the same for the camry. Heres a few links to the topic at the forum.

http://www.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307444
http://www.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312425

Pros and cons to the way the new cars come with built in stereos but things can still be done about it. I think I'll find a way to fit these in the camry when I get one.

Door speakers should be a breeze to replace. Just look at your current ones and get the size, mounting depth, etc. Then compare with those available at crutchfield or sounddomain.

For adding an amp and subs... also relatively easy.
The easy way is to tap into your door speaker wires and use a line-out converter to convert to RCA cables. Plug those into your amp along with power and you're done.

There could be an alternative with the JBL upgraded system. There should be a way to tap into the line-in wires in the amp under the passenger seat and run those to the amp for your sub. A wiring diagram would help a lot with that!

Good luck!

I went to the Crutchfeild site and the front door sizes are 5.25"-6.75". I have the JBL w/6 disc changer system. Isn't the front doors 6x9's?

Ok, here are some audio suggestions for you 07 Camry folks:

Keep the stock radio! It will not be worth it at this time to replace it and try to make an aftermarket unit fit.
AND If you look closely, it has some nice features such as source-dependent volume and tone controls - very slick.

Keep in mind that with most new factory systems. the manufacturer will set its own EQ settings in the radio.
Typically they will boost low frequencies at low volume levels so that the system sounds better to the listener. Once you go past a certain volume level, the bass will taper down.
This is avoid distortion that can damage your speakers.
Try it in your car and you will see what I mean.
Therefore, the BEST way to add on aftermarket speakers\amps is to use a device that takes the output from your radio and strips the built-in EQ settings off.
One such device is the JLAUDIO Cleansweep.
This will interface to your radio and send the clean signal out to your amps.
It has many other functions in addition.

Read more about it here:

Oh yeah, almost forgot --- those with JBL factory systems have the following speakers:

(2) 6x9" Full-Range speakers in the rear deck

(2) 6x9" "woofers" in the front doors

(2) 2.5" midranges in the corner dash locations
