USA Can 4Cyl Pull a Small Trailer

I am a new member and am considering buying a Camry (2002,2003). My question is this - I currently have a 1997 V6 Taurus and pull a small boat trailer. The trailer is attached using a Class I hitch and the boat is 14' alum with a 15hp motor. Would a 4cyl Camry pull the boat and trailer reasonably. I use the boat for short distances not more than 15 times a year. I am 66 and certainly will not be breaking any land speed records. Thanks

the I4 engine in the gen 5 Camry's actually have more power than the V6taurus. (i read it somewhere.) and the I4 cam will pull it but i would be kinda worried about the suspension.

IMO..if you're going to do any towing, I would go with a V6 just to be safe. The Camry is already ~3200lbs [I4] so I would think a V6 might be a better idea. Just my $0.02

The camry clearly lsts that it has 1000lb towing capacity. That is all I will say. The decision is yours.

Personally I wouldn't use my car for towing.. i don't even let people lean on it. (lol)

I'd be more worried about messing up the rear suspension than I would about the engine. Turn Overdrive off or drive in fourth and you should be fine.

If you don't go too often... why don't you just continue to use your Taurus? You'll probably be spending more time in the boat anyways.

When/if (knock on wood) the taurus dies, then get a nice pick up or SUV. Or are you trying to get a camry to replace the Taurus???

I think it is no problem. Our Previa, 4 cly with less power than my 04 towed a 5x8 and 5 people up a mountain no problem. I wouldn't be too worried about the rear suspension. I had the trunk, back seat and front passenger seat full with heavy stuff when I moved out and I don't sag afterwards.

it kinda depend on how much you're towing and where you're towing to. if it's going to be hills and it's a row boat, then it's fine. but if you're planning to pull a cruise boat, please get the v6. you'll definitely love it. remember... gas mileage is almost the same between 4 cyclider and v6 and it's only about $2000 more than a 4 cylinder. i'm sure you'll be alot happier with the v6 as it'll assure enough power to tow your stuff. good luck.
