5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
A Lincoln engineer said "the 3.5-liter V6 powering the 2007 Toyota Camry requires 91-octane fuel to hit its advertised hp of 268."
Is this true? I thought that Toyota's number of 268HP was with regular fuel and if premium was used, it'd get to 270+HP? Just wondering if anyone knows conclusively. Thanks!

The engine makes 268 with regular and 280 with premium. The reason it dropped was new SAE regulations stated that they could only post numbers achieved with premium if the manual explicitly stated to use premium only, which it doesn't.
The 4 cyl should use 87 and 87 only. Anything higher will be bad for the engine (gas wont burn as completely, uber carbon buildup, etc).

I believe 4 cylinder recommends 87 and the V6 recommends 91, but I thought that with 87 octane (regular around here), that the advertised horsepower of 268 would be correct. I'm almost out of gas, so maybe I'll try a 91 tank and see if I notice.

So basically the guy from Lincoln is either a liar or just uniformed?

I have been mixing 89 with 87. When I see 89 at the same price as 87 I will top off the tank in my I4 Camry. I also have been running straight 89 in my Park Avenue V6 3.8L) lately to see if there is a difference in mileage. I believe there is...

Yeah, the 280 HP number from the '05 model year is obtained with premium. Besides the slight bump in HP, I've always thought that premium provided maximum efficiency (gas mileage most importantly) and smoothness.

If the 2007 Camry needed premium only it would be clearly stated in the owners manual.
For example, check out several "high performance" cars like the Mustang Cobra, which requires 91 octane, there's no mistake about what the owners manual says.
My 2007 XLE V-6 runs perfectly on regular octane and I have no intention of wasting my money on premium fuel when it's not required.
ok.
2GR-FE engine requires 87 octane, if you put 91 octane you could get 272 hp, thats what happens on the Lxus ES350, using the same comp ratio as 07 CAMRY
I have put premium only once and it was V-power to clean the engine, only Shell and Chevron do this.
A modified version of this engine
2GR-FSE has a diferent comp ratio of 11.8 instead of 10.8, therefore requires Premium, on top of that ha a diferent injection system. if you use Regular on this you will get knoking
if you put rtegular on ES350 all you get is less performance, wich is the same as 07 CAMRY but it is not required for Camry (mostly for marketing)
the tradeoff analysis of selling Camry with premium and 272hp Vs regular and 268 hp will indicate that the 268hp is enough and makes it a seller...
