5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I would also like to here more input for the 4 cyl owners with at least 1500 mi on the car. Are you guys also having hesistation issues.
I ordered my 4cyl and it should be here tomorrow, but I may change my mind if this is a major issue. Most of my driving will be city so I cant deal with a hesistation between lower gears..
I too have the 4cly with auto and have the hesitation problem. I have about 8,000 miles on it and it has not seen the dealer since I picked it up new. The problem is worse when it is hot and the a/c is on. I am waiting for a tsb or some kind of fix. I spoke to my dealer once about the prob. and he shut me down quick "it is a drive buy wire system, there is nothing you can do" I am watching these forums for responses from other peoples dealers. I also have a problem with the engine surging under hard aceleration, about 3/4 throttle. I suspect the vvt. This is the first car I have driven with this type of engine.
I believe I need to have this TSB done on my car. Would it be better to have this repair done at a dealership different from the one I purchased the car from now, or wait until December and have it done at the dealership I bought from? I am concerned about problems I might encounter at this different dealer if the repair is not done properly.
I don;t know much about cars guys-please help me. WHen I am on cruise control at about 80mph, the trans kind of shifts down and then back up again, most noticeably on uphill slopes. Is that bad? I don't experience the downshifting on decceleration though.

The cruise control is doing what is supposed to do - maintain your set speed.
If it cannot maintain the speed with additional throttle, it will downshift to do it. There is some range of dead band before it downshifts.
If you don't want it to downshift, then disengage the cruise control and slow down going up the hills.
Parts were on backorder, they are now in. I'm dropping off car this evening and they claim they will have it done tomorrow. Will report then if the TSB works, probably on Thursday or Friday so I can get a cold start in.
To answer your initial question reyrey127, does the TSB fix the flare problem. NO, IT DOES NOT FIX the problem at least with my vehicle. I picked up my ride yesterday and as I drove away from the dealership the flare happened and then again this morning, now my car sits back at the dealership. The worst thing is that I also experienced the flare between 1st and 2nd as well as the 3rd and 4th. I called Toyota Customer Care and recieved a case number regarding the trans problem. This is my first Toyota and may be my last depending on how this gets resolved.
Sarge, any luck with getting a fix now? I'm thinking of taking my car in Friday to see if they can fix it :-( I have started another thread about my problems that you can check out if you want, but I was curious (hoping!) if your issue has been resolved. Thanks!
