5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 2004 Toyota Camry LE (no ABS)lost grip on wet road and slid into opposite lane. Luckily, I was in a red light when all the traffic stopped. I was going about 25 miles and slowing to a really sharp curve then it lost grip. If you live in Chattanooga, TN, the road is the infamouse Hixson Pike that had claimed at least 75 people's lives. Each time the government wanted to straighten the S curve, someone from the public claims it is unnecessary saying if you drive slow, you can avoid accident. I was driving slowly and was coming to a stop but I still couldn't help it.
What would you do?
-swap my car for a 2001 BMW 740? ( they are selling those for $20K with 75k or more miles)
-swap my car for a used Mercedes C320 ($25K for 2002)?
-put on new tire? I still have about 1/4" of tread left and the OEM tires I have on, Goodyear Integrity, now have about 38K miles on them. I searched on discounttire.com and got a list of OEM tires but need to know which one provides the most traction. http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...004&vid=008206
-change into winter tire?
-avoid driving all together and walk? that might be more dangerous than driving because cars might hit you.
luckily nothing happened because every other car stopped. It was red lights btw. I posted the same thread on this board. This guy offer a good insight when driving around the curve.
You shouldn't be braking on the curve. You anticipate a curve ahead and slow down before hitting the curve. If necessary, you should be braking before the curve so that you are at the proper speed to negotiate the curve without braking or even with accelerating a little. When braking on curves, you are bound to lose traction, and I would guess that this would even be the case with ABS. Same goes with making turns. You slow down to a proper speed before the turn, so that when you make the turn, you are not braking, but either coasting or accelerating.
First of all, I need to know more info. For instance, what made you pick those cars you listed above? What's important to you? Reliability? Price? Safety? Performance? Etc.
well if i were u i would just get a set of much better new tires becuz i also got into an accident cuz of the integritys with my 2005 Camry,,those tires are horrible,,get something like BF goodrich Momentum or something,,or u can even get winter tires but then the ride wont be as smooth and it will be much louder. just spend some good money on some decent tires its worth it,,,that Camry is great,,i love the car but the OEM tires are alwayz shit,,
Get rid of those friggin Goodyears, they suck in the rain, even when new! I had Toyo Spectrums on my 02 SE and slid into an intersection because of no grip in the rain. These cars really benefit from ABS, wish I had it now. Anyway, I opted for Michelins when I went to the 17's and they made all the difference. Grip in the rain is much improved and money well spent IMO.

I wouldnt have Goodyear on my car if they were free. If you go with new tires go with Yokohama Avid H4s. Jon.
That's interesting info. Are Goodyears that bad? I bought some last year from Wal-mart (when cars were super new to me). They are Goodyear Viva Touring (70,000 mile warranty). I got em because they had good reviews. Haven't really tried any maneuvers in inclement weather but they are much more quieter than my badly worn stock tires. I usually drive a lot more carefully when the road is wet.

I like the Ventus HRIIs on my car. I used to go through *mini floods, big puddle* slipping and sliding. But now it's more controlled. Not completely, but i noticed a big improvement and of course................don't drive fast when it's pouring and turn on your drls or headlights so people know where you are.

Hey Jon, where'd you get the Sylvania Hyperwhite 194s? I never heard of them before. I visited the for sale link on your sig. I might be interested in getting some if they will work for the gen 5s.
Edit: Off topic, sorry but I had to ask.
