5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Yesterday, talking to a friend in Argentina (South America) told me that he got a Generation 6 camryV6 , the car comes from Japan, I saw pictures an is an XLE, identical at the one that we have here, BUT it comes with rain sensors, that means that you have the windshield wipers in the authomatic position, it works faster or slower according with the amount of whater that sensor gets.
Rain sensor.
Another thing that he told me and I didn't see here is all black leather interior, with wood inserts.
Also the level of the headlights is autoadjustable, according with the amount of passengers.
Headlights washers.
No bluethoth technology.
No Aux plug.
No JBL unit.
Also with a sticker price of $50.000 dollars .
Question is: Anybody has this futures in a car manufactured in Japan??? anybody from Canada has this futures????
one of the first things i checked to see was to see if the camry came with intermittent wipers (it doesn't), because my accord had them...
but basically all it does is, is speed sensored, so that when at a stop it wipes slow, then gradually wipes faster as you accelerate
Netforcer, this is different, It works by the amount of water that touches the sensor, if you are stop in a light and it's pouring they will start to work faster.
If you didn't know, cars in Brazil are expensive. A civic almost runs for $25,000-$30,000. So it's not surprise that his Camry is $50,000.
Also for the rain sensor wipers, it automatically adjusts the speed depending on the amount of rain it hits on the windshield. If it pours hard, it goes faster, if it drizzles, it goes really slow. This also depends on the speed you go as well.

I'm not a fan of rain sensor wipers.
I mean.. jeez are they really necessary?
If you have that option and ever get a stone chip crack on that windshield, that sucker is expensive to replace.
You would have to go with your insurance company.
anyone have any idea on how the sensor detects how much rain is coming down? just curious.
Rain-sensing wiper systems typically deploy a small sensor mounted on the inside surface of the glass. The sensor shines beams of infrared light inside the windshield at about a 45 degree angle. This light bounces off of the outside surface of the windshield, and into an optical detector in the sensor. If water in any form sticks to the outside surface of the windshield, it disturbs the beams. Circuitry connected to the detector picks up the disturbances. Usually, a computer interprets the data to determine what speed setting is right for the windshield wipers, and runs them accordingly.

I loved my rain sense wiper feature on my STS. At least on the Caddy even if you need to repair the windsheild, they just re-attached the rain sense module same as they would need to re-glue your rear view mirror. My rain sense module was only $75 bucks discounted and was mounted just under the rear view mirror.
When I found it very helpful? Passing a 40 footer in heavy down pour or when another car would splash you, the wipers automatically go into full speed mode. Normally you would be reaching for the wipers.....

Interesting.
I was with my daughter when she bought her Lexus and the finance/add-ons guy was talking about some warranty on the windshield for replacement if cracked and that's when he mentioned about the cost of a Lexus windshield replacement.
Maybe the Lexus has it built into the windshield.
Funny thing was she bought a AWD IS 250 which doesn't come with the rain sensor option.
it is in spanish, I understand it.
autoleveling HIDs on V6 model!
electric folding mirrors!! and we cant get manual folding mirros here! I prefer that over the JBL we got. Not over bluetooth.
In Puerto Rico, the SE doesn't have TPMS, and is not available as a L4, and it has SRS bags in passenger knees. The one here in NJ only has it in Drivers knee. also no leather option on SE.

Most I've seen has a small box (like in the link you posted above) mounted to the windsheild just under the rear view mirror. The 06 BMW 3's have it intergrated in the back of the mirror.
Nowadays the auto dimming mirror is starting to filter down to avg. brand cars. But for the rain sense in the past, seemed to be an option included in only the higher model luxury cars. But I think now it's starting to show up more common in all luxury cars. I'm guessing it will probably be a few years still before we start seeing them throughout the Honda, Toyota etc. line.
BTW my 1996 STS had the rain sense wipers standard.
It's an option I miss since moving over to the SE.
That's right Rsjyss, It's a box behind the mirror. I owned several European cars, Peugeot, Citroen, Renault, Fiat , back in 1996 when I had my last Peugeot I remember having cooler in the globe compartment, adjustable headlights, rain sensors, headlight washers , The electric windows can also be operated with the car switched off, you can leave all the windows down and the car unlocked and after 3 minutes it will roll up the windows and lock the doors, or just close everything with the alarm, never parked your car, shut off the engine, get out the car and found out you left the window down?????? You'll wish you can just, push a bottom on your key and everything will close by itself . Still 10 years later I don't see those features in normal American cars, just simple things that make the car more comfy, do you need them?? well probably no, but having a cool soda or water in the car was nice, and the rain sensors are like the auto-on headlights they were simply set-and-forget and don't forget the quiet turbo diesel engines...
I know a lot of you must be saying, well go back if you don't like it.....Just saying a $31.000 fully loaded Camry or Honda should have those features, a least the auto windows roll up, I remember I used to go nuts when I just came to the states, hahahahaha.......

What are you talking about, the Camry does and has been equipped with "variable intermittent wipers" since the Gen 4 Camry. Either you dont know what exactly "intermittent wipers" are or you are grossly misinformed.
Most of the above features are for Lexus models. My 2001 RX300 has:
* Auto-leveling HID's.
* Anti-rolling windows (like garage doors) if someone sticks hands or somethings while the windows roll up, they will roll back down. I think this feature should be filtered down to all Toyota models as safety standard.
* All windows and sunroof can be openned by press and hold "open" button on key fob and closed by turning the key to lock position (on the driver's door) and hold. I hardly use this feature though.
Joe B, I'm surprised that IS250 doesn't come with rain-sensing wipers
