5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am set on buying Camry V6 LE 2007. It will be my first experience on buying a bran new car.
What shell I pay attention to? I know that dealers trying to sell it as more loaded as possible.
-what kind of tires(does it makes a difference)?
- does it make cense to order any extra packages? I really do not want to spend lots of money on extras but I was wondering may be any of those extras are actually needed?
- I see that lots of people are getting change of oil for life. How are you guys are getting it when the Camry is a hot selling car and dialers do not want to low a price as it is?
- Are there are any fees are MUST ( like destination charges, …..) or it is just the dealer’s way to make more money?
- I have 4 dealerships in 12 miles distance. Shell I go to the one that closest and most likely I would be coming to them if there are any problems or just go with the best price? I am concern that if I would buy from another dealership and then go to the closest one they would give me a heart time.
- I have already learned from the forum that I should shop around for the extended warranty and not to go with the dealership price.
- Shell I become a member of AAA, would it give me any discount or it is strictly depends on the membership?
- I am a college student, would I be able after barging a price ask for the student discount as well or it would be too much?
- Are there are any other things I should pay attention to?
the dealership told me that i couldn't co sign to get the student discount. so basically to get it, i would have to finance with my super high interest rate
You don't have to buy anything that you don't want to, but certain options are usually ordered with certain cars. EX: I have an 07 XLE V6 w/ NAV - mine came w/ remote start - I couldn't care less, but every car they searched when I was buying had remote start since I wanted NAV.
In my opinion - the less the car is at the dealer the less chance of someone else F-ing up your car, so I would never bring my car for a free oil change anyway. Anyone can change their own oil & on the 07 V6 it is so much easier than other V6's in previous years. The oil filter is a cartridge type & it is located next to the oil drain plug underneath the car, so there is no possibility of oil dripping down onto the frame when chainging oil - much more cleaner than previous years! I don't trust dealerships - nobody takes care of the car as if it was their own & I've had many bad experience with other people touching my car - so from now on unless it is warranty work that I have no choice - NOBODY touches my car except for me!
Mandatory Charges: Tax, Title, Destination & Registration are mandatory!
Closest Dealer: The closest dealer is NOT always or rarely is the best dealer to go to for price & service! I purchased my car @ Toyota of Hackensack in March 2006, as soon as the 07s came out. The sticker on my car was about $33,000 & nobody wanted to budge on the price - some were charging over sticker because "IT is new & everyone wants it". I paid $29,400 @ Toyota of Hackensack w/out much bargaining hassle. I recommend that you go to them, It's not far from NY (Don't know where you live), but you will also save on the tax - it's only 7% here in NJ!
AAA Discount: AAA Members don't get any discounts on cars that I know of, however if you are a Costco Wholesale member, like I am ($50/year) the Costco Auto Buying Program (Set me up w/ Toyota of Hackensack) really was the best deal BY FAR!!!
Other than that - do your homework! Dealers like to put Options on the purchase contract as Feature Codes! Learn what these feature codes are (Hint: They are on the window stickers next to the description of the option) Some dealers say they will get you a car with what you want (Vebally), not put those features on the purchase agreement, and once you sign for what they put on that paper @ that price - your out of luck if they tried to scam you.
My suggestion: Go online to toyota's website - learn the different features available on the Camry, as far as differences between the LE/SE/XLE V6's - pick which model you like the best & then go around to dealerships knowing exactly what you want. The more that you know about the vehicle, the less they can try to BS you, because you will catch their BS & probably walk away because who wants to buy from a liar?
Student discount is only $400 now! - Down from the $1,000 it was Last year! but it's still something. In order to get this discount, you have to be the primary owner / borrower to receive!
Antonio, thank you so much for your response. I live upstate NY so Hackensack would be about 40-60 minutes ride (without traffic). I already did a spreadsheet with the dealerships and Toyota of Hackensack is on the list. Can you recommend someone there?
Also, as of taxes, unfortunately, they charge taxes depends on your license ( in what state) so for me it would be NY taxes anyway .
As of options, I did printed out what means what(abbreviation) so I would be ready for that. I do want just a LE V6 without any extras. However, I did read somewhere that some dealerships are trying to put on the car summer tires, cheaper one so I thought that tips like that might be in help.
Also, I did read couple of the posts that throw the membership in AAA people got a good discount. I will do research regarding Costco membership. thanks for the tip. I already have a 1 inch folder of researches regarding Toyota (my relatives are freaking out when they see it) but staff like what windshield wipers should be better, how to figure out is Toyota from the Kentucky or Japan I can get only in the forums.
I also want a car that made in Japan and not white or silver color (ideally blue ribbon). I am willing to wait for it 1-2 month ( for the delivery) but this is what I want. I was wondering how difficult would it be.
I am collecting all the staff together and would start faxing, emailing dealerships at the end of November.
The nearest to me dealership is Rockland Toyota. In short, I hope that the rest dealerships would be better. I was able to get them down to $22,000 and it took me lots of arguing with them. They do not want to bargain at all- if you are not happy- good buy. Besides the point that I knew about car more then they and a sales person got very upset with me due to that fact.
As for the student discount, even $400 are still money. It is like a monthly payment for the car ( I am planning to put at least $6000 down).
Well, dealers are always on a look out of who they can take advantage of... don't fall under that category. They like females and people who seem like they are new to the US... mainly because they don't know much about how the system of "haggling" works.
$22,000 is actually a pretty good price for a V6. MSRP is about $24,237 and the average person in my area that buys that same vehicle is about $24,209. The invoice is at $21,572... so for a hot car like the camry... don't expect to get any lower than that.
These prices is assuming that you want the Z1 package... this is your floor and cargo mats... The car does not come with floor mats. You can alwasy try to bargain them to throw that in with the deal... sometimes it works!
If you get into an arguement with the sales rep... demand to see the general manager. Threaten to file a complaint to Toyota and they will all of a sudden be your best friend. That's how I got my lifetime free oil change... will I ever use it... maybe. probably.
You can always say... to them.. $22,000 out the door and you'll sign today. If you got them on your line by saying you will sign today... they may fall for that. $22,000 out the door means you don't have to pay for tax and tags... they pay it out of their own pocket.
If you can't get them to give it to you out the door, tell them to put the $22,000 in writing with exactly what you want... no extras... just what you want. Make sure it is on one of their forms with the dealers info on the header.
Take that written quote and see if other dealers are willing to match or beat it. I had to go to 4 different Toyota dealers to get the deal I have. I had them compete back and forth... but I would say that it was well worth it.
Oh yea... destination charge is already included in the MSRP... so you don't have to worry about that. And yes... you have to pay that destination charge.
If you want to save more money... try going for the I4 instead of the V6. Both are pretty nice and the I4 has a lot of power in it. I test drove both... OF course the v6 had more power... but I was surprised what the I4 could do.
If you go for the I4... you could probably get the LE I4 for about $19,500. This is about $1000 over invoice. Camry's are hot... so it's tough to get what you want. I helped my friend bargain the I4 LE for $19,400... nothing except for the Z1 package (floor and cargo mats).
I am on a market for Camry V6 LE. I did exactly like people recommended: send an emails, asking for the Internet price,….. The best 2 offers I got were $22,800 and $20,800. It was fishy that for $20,800 they got both of the colors I wanted in the lot. So, I went there yesterday. Guess what- I was boldly told in my face: ”we are paid to lie to you and to get you in the door”. I derived 2 hours after work to get to that dealership. I was so upset (to say at least). Of cause they have told me that they can get a car I want in 6-8 weeks. Price is very tempting but, to be honest, after I have stressed out to them that I am ready to buy if they have what I want and explained to them that I would have to have a long drive to their dealership and would appreciate the truth… I do need a car but really do not feel like overpaying for it.
I did emailed other dealerships saying that I have $20,800 offer and can they bit it, but no one have even responded to it.
I know that car is kind of “hot” but come on, this kills all excitement on buying a new car.
You need to back up a little and take a breath. Go to kbb.com and build and price a car. It will give you the rough wholesale and retail prices. Toyota will add to the wholesale price for advertising and that isn't figured in. Build the car the way you want it. kbb.com will show the retail prices for every option. Given this info, email the internet salesman at the dealerships in your area and ask them to quote a price on exactly what you want, given that they don't have it and must order. Get the price and print it out and save it. You are wanting a V6 for 20800 and I don't think the dealer can sell it for that but good luck. I recently purchased an LE v6 for about 2300 under the sticker and I figured I had worked a pretty good deal. Bear in mind that it had leather and a bunch of goodies. You aren't going to get much off the sticker if the car is stripped. Again, check kbb.com and see how much profit there is in a stripped car. No dealer EVER wants to sell one of them. They have to make some money after all. If anyone tells you that they low balled you to get you in the door, leave. Even if appears they did, leave. At closing, they will try to sell you LoJack, extended warranties, etc. Just say no. They will try to finance the car through the dealership. Always have your financing worked out before you open their door, be it cash, check or a loan from your credit union.
The best 2 offers I got were $22,800 and $20,800. It was fishy that for $20,800 they got both of the colors I wanted in the lot.
gdanaher , I appreciate your advice but the sticker price in NY and NJ is $25600 for the basic V6 LE. The suggested price by Edmonds is $23600 so they are overpricing it $2000 at least.
The invoice price according to the Edmunds is $20500 so I thought that $300 above invoice was a not a bad deal. That is why $20800 was sounding good to me. I did not include destination charged that $650 and I thought that I would have to pay in on top of invoice anyway.
The best price they are giving me is $22800 and claming that it is $700 above the Invoice. I am wondering where did they get that Invoice.
All dealers just telling me :“this car is hot and we would sell it anyway”. Do not get me wrong, but when I am buying $5k diamond, I am pampered all the way. When I am buying $25K car ( NY 8% taxes on top of price) I am treated like a piece of XXX. I know that it is the way car dealerships run but I work hard for money and want to be treated like human being.
I am going to a dealership this weekend because I need a car. But $1K-$2K is a money to me and having taxes and loan % on top of it makes a big difference.
My brother-in-law works at Honda and he have told me that even if dealership sells you a car 5% below Invoice, they are still making money. Unfortunately for me, I am not comfortable in Honda or I would have a good deal there.
No problem.
Can’t wait for my car to arrive. My old one completely died on me yesterday ( just refused to start at all ) and was in the shop since yesterday.
