5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Yesterday while driving, I pressed the mode button on the steering wheel controls of my 07 XLE (non nav) JBL audio system and accidently muted the radio and the Bluetooth connection. I couldn't figure out how to get the sound back on so I tried turning the audio system off and then back on, but it didn't help. Finally, I pulled over and shut the car off, waited about 15 seconds and restarted it. Then everything returned to normal. Is there a mute feature on the JBL system that I accidently activated? If so, how does it work? I went through the owner's manual quickly, but couldn't find anything on this. It's possible I could have missed it in the manual.

I have the Camry Manual online and searched for the word "Mute" and nothing came up suggesting there is a mute function for the radio. So I missed it too. Could you please elucidate?

Pressing and holding (I'd say maybe 3 seconds) the Mode button on steering wheel will mute the system. Press the Mode button again and the system tuns on. Press Mode w/o holding and it cycles through FM/FM2/AM etc.

According to the owner's manual, when the JBL is on, pressing and holding the "Mute" switch shuts off the JBL unit and conversely pressing the mode swith turns it back on.

Searching for the word "Mute" online does not equate to reading the manual.
See if you can find the answer on Page 207 of your Paper manual............
The same thing happened to mine maybe three times, the only way to get it back alive is shutting the car off. Every time that it happens I have been too quick to cycle thru the CD to radio or I had cancelled bluetooth before the lady started to talk. To me is a software issue related to the controller of the amp.
If you hold the mode button it will turn the system off, it is on the button, says off (hold)

The manual just states that you can power on or off the audio system via the "MODE" switch. Mike Gerber's problem was a little different. Quote:" pressed the mode button on the steering wheel controls of my 07 XLE (non nav) JBL audio system and accidently muted the radio and the Bluetooth connection. I couldn't figure out how to get the sound back on so I tried turning the audio system off and then back on, but it didn't help." Notice he said it muted the radio/bluetooth. What actually happened was he turned the unit off. Now here's the kicker. He said he tried to turn on the radio and it wouldn't turn on. It should have (I've duplicated this on mine and you can turn on the radio via "mute" button or power button. He evidently had glitch or problem because he apparently couldn't power up the unit. Your first reply was no help to him at all, it implied that there was a "MUTE" function when actually all you are doing is powering down the unit. These forums are suppose to help people with their Camry issues. Smart As*** answers aren't appreciated. Go MUTE yourself (this is said with some humor and not meant to start a flame war or the such). In other words, please lighten up

To be very specific about what happened, the audio system was "muted", not turned off. I could switch channels (I was in the AM mode). I tried 3 or 4 different channels and there was no sound. I also tried to use my cellphone using the bluetooth feature pressing the talk switch on the steering wheel and saying "Dial By Number". Dial By Number appeared to work, as I got the Dial By Number indication on the radio dial, just no female voice came on to give me the verbal instructions. I didn't bother continuing to try to complete the call.

I think wilfredcruz is correct, this is a software issue. The only way I was able to get the system to return to normal was also to turn the car off and restart it.

njerald,
I spoke to Toyota corporate Monday morning and they too referred me to page 207 of the manual. Here's what page 207 says about the mode switch:
3. "MODE" switch
Push the "MODE" switch to select an audio mode. Each push changes the mode sequentially if the desired mode is ready to use.
To turn the audio system on, push the "MODE" switch.
To turn the audio system off, push and hold the "MODE" switch until the system turns off.
Nothing is mentioned about a "mute" function.
I called Toyota corporate back Monday evening and spoke to another representative. She also referenced page 207, only problem was her page 207 was not like my page 207. She hypothesized that there must be updated versions of the owner's manual. If anybody has a differnet page 207 and it says something about a mute fuction. I would appreciate hearing exactly what it says.
Thanks again for everybody's help with this issue.

Ah, I see now. I have a similar problem: When I'm lisntening to CD's and switch to AM using the "mode" switch, sometimes it is muted (this situation does not happen everytime. So far about 6 times). All I do is use the "mode" switch to recycle around to AM again and voila. Yes, there is a software problem probably. And no, the answer is not on page 207.

I just looked at brand new manual from a Camry fresh off the truck. Page 207 says nothing about mute. Hope that helps.
I have the same exact problem. I will change from FM to CD and then back to FM but won’t hear anything. The radio will come back after cycling through everything once more. The big problem is that later when l try to make a phone call and I will hear nothing. I have to turn the car off in order to get the Bluetooth to work again. I have found no way of getting the Bluetooth to come off of "mute". If anyone has any suggestions ill be more than happy to test them out.
