5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just came from one of my local dealers and was pricing out a 2007 Camry SE 4cyl-5AT. The salesman brought out his "invoice" sheet and showed me everything that was coming with the car like heated leather package, moonroof option, JBL sound system, vehicle stability control. But I'm a little confused with some of these extra costs that I have to pay for, like destination charge, marketing and dealer holdback and a few other little costs that were associated with the car. Are these extra costs negotiable? And if they are, how do I go about doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
marketing is a BS charge - tell them you won't pay it or they have no deal = they'll drop it
just be stern with them, they want to make a sale & will bend over backwards to do it!
I got my 2007 Camry XLE V6 w/ Leather, Nav, Remote Start for $29,000 b4 tax & fees on March 20, 2006, when there were barely any V6 available in the country, let alone XLE V6 w/ NAV! In fact there were only two in the state, and the car i bought wasn't even my dealer's car, they had to trade for it!!! I only waited 1 week for delivery because they had to pickup the car!!
This goes to show you that although every other dealer wanted to charge me $32-$33,000 on a car with a sticker of $31,700 because the car was in demand, I found a dealer who would negotiate, and they dropped their pants on that deal! - almost $3k BELOW Sticker on a car that was only out for 2 weeks - How about that!!
Act like you don't care if you get the car from them - your deposit is refundable, contingent upon a test drive of the vehicle that they want to deliver to you (This is how it works at most dealers), so my first recommendation is to get prices from atleast 3-4 other dealers before making your decision of what dealer you will ultimately purchase from!
When you act like you will walk away from the entire deal for a few hundred dollars, they will do what you want, and tell them you wnat the whole bullshit charge dropped, don't agree to meet them half way, because they will expect that - it is just a BS charge that they throw in there to makeup for money they lost in negotiations - just like they rape you on your trade in because they will make have to make up for the deal they are giving you -- this is why you should never trade in, unless your car is a total POS, and it will take you forever to unload on the street yourself!

Joe,
Invoice price for that model is $19,525. MSRP price is $21,940 without extras. Dealers mark up extras roughly 25% so there is room for negotiations. Some dealers tack on extra fees which may or may not be negotiable. Google 2007 Camry SE invoice and do your pricing online. Take that to the dealership or contact local dealers via websites to submit an offer, which eliminates salesman commissions. If you take your time and do the research, you can save thousands. Good luck.
Camry SE 4-Cylinder 5-Speed Auto
Option Package D
Wheel Locks Base Price:*$21,940
Delivery, Processing
& Handling Fee:**$620
Options:$3,095 ---> JBL 6-Disc In-Dash w/ BT, Moonroof Package, Heated Mirrors & VSC
Accessories:$59 Total MSRP:***$25,714
You should pay around $23,000 to $23,500
what kind of prices have you been given?
BTW - Toyota's site doesn't show Leather or Heated Seats available on the Camry SE I4 - are you sure he wasn't showing you the invoice for a V6 SE?

Thanks for all the info so far guys, I really appreciate it.
I gave the dealer a $500 deposit for them to order my setup for me. But while I was sitting there contemplating his invoice sheet, I couldn't really come to grips on why I had to pay the damn marketing fee; which was about $285 and I asked the salesman why I'm being charged this and he said "well, we all have to pay it." Well, if the dealer pays for it, and then they charge ME for it, then technically the dealer doesn't really pay for it in the end because I just paid it for them, right? On top of that, they said that the car is from Montana which charges $285 for "marketing" but then that price goes up when it comes to WA because more money is spent on marketing blah blah blah, so he said it'll probably be over twice that, like $500-600??? What the hell.... so yea, I'm not too happy that I'm being charged a marketing fee for the car when the dealer claims that EVERYBODY has to pay for it, even themselves. What about the dealer holdbacks? Because there was a charge of like $485 for holdbacks; jesus christ. Do I have to foot the cost for that as well? I saw the invoice for the car was only $18,868 and then it was $1416 for the heated leather package, $750 for the JBL sound system, $520 for vehicle stability control, another $750 for the moonroof. So, after pricing the car with options, it was fairly reasonable; a price that I could handle. And then came the destination fee (which I know I can't avoid), marketing, dealer holdback, $10 for GAS (unbelievable). All in all, it was like another $2k worth of extra charges on top of the price of the car, and then he said add another $500 over invoice and then you have a deal. Good god, after it was all said and done, I think the car was like $25,200 before tax and license. Does that sound right???
I'm sure you are paying a fee for the Montana dealer since that is out of your dealers trading area.
Since you went at this purchase backasswards, you have no leverage!!!!!!!
Dealer Invoice with TDA is about $24,000 for your car. MSRP - $26,920.
Sorry.....
RUN....... to the dealer and get your god damn deposit back, don't look back, don't pass go, don't collect $200 ... collect your damn $500 and go get your car from a dealer that atleast provides the lube and give you a kiss before raping you up the ass!

Iono if you got a good deal or not cus of the area you live in (seems a bit high) but you can always go to the dealer and scare them by saying I want my deposite back which hopefully makes them negotiate a bit more.

I'm guessing it's because you didn't enter his zip code when using the build feature. Toyota offers differen't packages to differnt regions which seems stupid cus I wouldn't mind having more options to chose from, but I guess they have their reasons.
If you compare the options from these two zipcodes: 89174(Las Vegas, Nevada) & 91203(Glendale California-SoCal)
You'll see that they both offer differnt option packages.

Ok guys. Update. I went to the Puyallup dealership and got my deposit check back from the salesman. Anybody know of another good dealer in the state of WA? I probably made a mistake with Puyallup by giving them my deposit check and then taking it back, but the salesman said if anything happens, feel free to call him. But after seeing his price for the Camry SE, I think that I can do better at another dealership. Any suggestions? Thanks.
