5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So tell me folks. Which car would i enjoy more? Both would have navigation.
The new camry is rated with more HP, i do not know if it translates to better bperformance #s compared to the super sedan nissan maxima.
I also noticed you can get some great deals on a SE with Navi, some here say high $20K...when i price the new maxima, its like $35,000.

Thanks for your thoughts
When I was doing my car search, I looked at and drove a 2006 Maxima SE and SL. I was very disappoined with the overall feel of the interior layout (it is subjective, I know) and more importantly the crazy amount of torque steer which isn't expected on a $30k+ car.
You can't go wrong with a Camry SE V6. I love mine.
BTW: Stroudsburg...as in PA? That's a beautiful area. I spent quite some time running back and forth along I80 and I84 with some stops in East Stroudsburg. Gotta love the girls at that school. Thank god I was single then.

wireless is right - the Maxima definitely has a lot of torque steer. I did the same comparisson in my search for a new car as well, but after driving the Maxima, I was really turned off.
The performance numbers on the Max would also be a bit lower than that of the Camry. I remember Toyota's web page once showed the Avalon beating the Max in a 0-60 time. I assume the Camry would do the same or better.
But you do get some things with the Max that no Toyota (and only 2 Lexus models offer) - a heated steering wheel on the SL model and an option for power folding outside mirrors (those are pretty slick). Of course, the Camry will have reclining rear seat whereas the Max doesn't. Oh yeah, the Camry gets slightly better gas mileage too, with a bit more HP under the hood.
I made my decision to go with a '07 Lexus ES350 over the Max but that is a subjective choice. Your choice is based on your priorities - good luck with everything and post some pictures when you get the new ride.

I had a Maxima. It was in the shop 17 times in 20 months. After the dealer said "your car has problems we can't fix", I met with Nissan's Corporate representative.
At the meeting, the corporate rep assured me that I didn't have any problems. When pressed to comment on the "mean time between failures" figure for Nissan's flagship car, he declined to do so.
Short of the story is that Nissan wouldn't budge, I had a car that was a lemon, I checked with an attorney who assured me that in my area, if a car RAN I had little to no recourse as the local courts rarely went against the manufacturer.
It has been 14 years and you folks are hearing the story as does every student I teach in Business Law when we cover lemon laws.
Think it might have been in Nissan's best interest to own up to the fact that this particular Maxima was a lemon???

Before I had my '07 SE V6 I had a '97 Nissan Altima SE which wasn't a nightmare, but every time I took it in for regular maintenance they would find something wrong with the car (coincidence???). I decided that I *might* give Nissan another try by looking at the new Maximas. I test drove one and was immediately turned off, I never looked at them again. I was seriously considering a fully-loaded Honda Accord, then I saw the re-designed Camry and knew I had to have one... hehe
