5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Well as some of you know, im shopping for a sedan. I think im passin gont he 2004 and up Maximas, I was also looking at the 2004-2005 Acura TLs.
Is the 2007 Camry nice and quiet at highway speeds (no cabin noise)
Also, when you guys close your doors, is it a nice "wump"...a nice sealing noise? You ugy sknow what i mean, just quality sounding, not junky..
Thanks for any info.
I'd like to say yes, but honestly there are some differences.
I've got some rattles and creaks in our 07 camry and my buddy with an 05 TL has never had anything like that... now he spent a lot more than I did and our cars are comperably equipped. His build quality is a little better, IMHO.

I considered a 2005 TL as well during my purchase planning and the TL does have a heavier feelings to it.. almost Audi-like, I also tested A4 the same day. I personally don't like the heavy German doors so it was't an issue for me but it was quite a noticable difference between Audi and Toyota.
My SE is reasonably quite on highway ( at about 120km/hr and I had the hood deflector on ) but definitely not as quiet as an Lexus. The 2006 TL that I tried didn't fare well either, I'd say both are about the same in terms of quietness.
The interior on the TL definitely is better than Camry, considering its price ( about C$10K more brand-new ) and the use of metalic material certainly adds to the high-tech essense of the TL.
Of course, I picked the Camry SE at the end because I can only afford used high-milage TLs plus, the 2007 SE looks WAY better than any Acura and I get to pocket the difference for other toys!
I disagree. I think the interior of the TL looks bland for any type of entry-level luxury sedan. I think the current interior of the Accord, Maxima, and Camry are better than the TL, which isn't good considering a TL is basically an Accord. But that is my opinion. Am I on drugs? NO.
the TL is my favorite car. but of course i bought a camry because i dont have an extra 10Gs to throw at an TL, but if money was not an issue, i would go with a TL.
the 07 is definetly better value.
TL definetly wins on quietness and interior cabin quality. but the 07 camry does not fall much behind. though the camry center panel does look very cheap. you get a fair amount of wind noise on the highways for the camry.
and lastly...regarding your "when you guys close your doors, is it a nice "wump"...a nice
sealing noise"...haha fortunately for you buddy. camry has the nice "wump" noise. haha.
you could also take a few other things into consideration. the 3rd generation TL came out 2004 and so you're about to enter the 4th year of the 3rd generation TL. and so the TL is due for a total redesign in about...2008~2009. a lot of depreciation right there. as apposed to the newly redesigned generation 6 07 camry, you're gona get a good 5 years of a generation 6 camry.
just a few things to think about.
regardless. both the TL and 07 Camry are great cars! goodluck!
If you're considering the TL, may as well consider the Lexus IS350 and/or ES350 (depending on your priority of sportiness vs luxury). They're all at very similar price points.
Both Lexus models are more powerful than the TL (except the TL-S) and both offer equipment that the TL doesn't have - i.e. smart key access, ventilated seats, panoramic glass roof (ES350), AFS HID system, Mark Levingson Audio (I love this one), I can go on but you get the point.
Or... if you're really into sporty cars, get a new G35. Similar priced to the TL and IS also.
Just some suggestions... hopefully you find it helpful.
Good luck with whatever you decide to buy

my .02 cent is the maintenance. Acura is a Honda that will require a timing belt and water replacement and it is a interference motor compared to the Toyota timing chain which requires no replacement. Acura mechanics charges more an hour than their Honda. I found that out when I had a Legend. but Acura is Honda as Lexus to Toyota.
Well, my first 2007 Camry SE test drive is what interrupted my drive to teh Acura dealership to put a deposit on a 2006 TL. All in all I got comparable performance, resale, reliability and features for $5k less (actual price, not MSRP). The TL interior is a little nicer, but the Camry is actually faster (straight line). Handling gives the TL a slight (very slight) advantage. It really comes down to personal preference and priorities. Spending the woney wasn't the issue, but saving it helped make a decision.
BTW: In my opinion, the G35 driver seat is one of the most uncomforable things I have ever been in. Why they insist on placing the power seat controls on the right bolster of the seat next to your leg is beyond me. It was very annoying, and the total package is definitely not worth the money, IMHO.

No, the Camry is a step down from a Acura TL. TL has more to offer over the Camry and its a bit better built with materials.
We had two 07 Camrys that both the Transmissions died. Toyota bought them back and we got a RL to replace those. I own a TL with no problems either. The Camry wasn't exactly quiet but not loud either.

That reminds me of something I have been meaning to ask you...if you spend $50k on an RL...why did you buy a sub-$30k Camry to being with?

You get what you pay for usually, but for my money, I'll never own another Acura if I can avoid it. I love the styling and everything, but our last acura (02 RSX Type-S) was burning oil and smoking by 60K miles (with perfect maintenance intervals and an almost text-book duty cycle), and the transmission was a constant misery.
Go test drive everything you can. The only reason I am so quick to give my opinion on so many car is that I drive every car I can get the chance to, no matter how mundane or awesome it may be, you need a frame of reference before you drop 40G's on an appliance, and the dealership is banking on the fact that you haven't driven all the compettition.
(Just please don't get a G35 Coupe, for the love of God)

I had an 04 Maxima ... loved the handling & styling, however the interior quality wasn't what I expected from a $30k+ car.
My 07 Camry XLE V6 (LOADED - Smart Key, Nav, Remote Start ...) is a very nice compromise between luxury and sportiness. It's not a Lexus ES350, so you can't expect an almost silent interior on the highway, but don't get me wrong, the Camry is pretty quiet, and no, the doors don't sound shitty like a GM when you sut them, they shut with a nice solid thump!
IMO - I would get a fully loaded XLE V6 ... for the money, you are getting almost everything that is available on the Lexus and the Acura at a much lower price ($10-12k savings!)
I also own a 98 ES300 Platinum Edition, so I know the differences in quality between Toyota & Lexus, and I have driven an ES350. The Cmary & the ES drive like each other performance wise, however the ES has different struts & suspension, so you cna feel the smoother ride ... but you really need to drive the cars yourself before meaking the decision, its totally up to you!

Both cars are great. I have a 07 XLE (nav, smart key, remote start etc...) I looked long and hard at the TL before I got the camry. The Camry is just the best bang for your buck, but the seats in the TL are by far more comfortable than leather seats in the camry.
