5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
On the SE/XLE/etc in the 2007 Camry model, when you are in "D" mode and on the freeway driving let say 80mph...that should put it in 6th gear...
Why the heck when you move it over to "S", it auto default to 4th gear?!, Should it default to the gear it is currently on? Man, I moved it over to "S" and my RPM went wack cause it defaulted down to 4th gear, so the car forced it self down to 4th gear while cruising at 80mph...
Its suppose to default to 4th. Just move it over, then paddle it up into 6th really fast

that automatic shift to 4th is the only weird option for the camry imo. some cars i've driven like the 06 maxima has a sport shifter that shifts to the gear your currently in.
i believe the reason for the default to 4th is so you can quickly drop into a lower passing gear when at higher speeds. some people just hit the gas harder in automatic to get the tranny to drop into a lower gear for a quick burst of acceleration, others like to switch it to s mode to more quickly drop gears for passing.
if you use the manual in other circumstances, you will find that the car automatically shifts up to the number you have it set in. so if you set it to 3, the car will shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd automatically, but you will have to manually shift up from that point.
It will default to 5th and 6th, you just need to be going faster when shifting to S... I would rather it go to a gear less than 4th, such as doing 30-40 MPH, it would be better suited to defaulting to 2nd gear.
I believe this is the only way to turn overdrive off, and is the reason that it goes to a max of 4th gear (since gears 5 and 6 are overdrives). On the Gen 5 Camry, it had an O/D Off button, but the Gen 6's do not.

Yea, but when you are travelling at highspeed, it auto jump on the RPM..which is bad for the engine, no? Especially when it could potentially knock the RPM in the red zone...usually occur when you accidently tap over to "S" mode while driving let say over 80mph?
No it won't go into the red zone. It will start out at 5 if it feels like the speed is too much for 4th gear. And there isn't anything wrong with taking the engine into the upper RPM's as long as you don't keep it there for long.
