Gen5 Spoiler Tail Light ?

I was just wondering if there is any way to wire up the tail light on the spoiler so that it turns on with the normal tail lights and is dim but when you brake it gets brighter. So in essense it works just like the normal tail lights.

you can do it the ghetto way and splice into the brake light.

normal tail light bulbs have two filaments... hence the dual brightness. to do that with the spoiler tail light, you'd have to replace it with LEDS (if it doesn't have it already) and use a PWM to control the brightness. gets a bit complicated if you're not familiar with electronics.

Well you wouldn't have to change out halogen if it alrady accepted diual filament...but i'm alsmot possitive that the spoiler comes with leds. You need something to control the leds...i thought PWM is a circuit board...all it does is act as a tray for the leds to be connected..you would other things to control the way it dimmed and brightend..but i have no experiece with this...so i my point is not too vaild.

Use a resistor and it will work just fine

They sell the Dual Circuit elements for $10 at http://customdynamics.com/flex_led_array.htm, But you can make it yourself for $1

The element is just a Y shape wire, one being directly 12v,the other uses a resistor to reduce voltage to have the LEDs dim, Use the resisted lead for running lights, Then the other goes directly to the LEDs with full 12v, use that lead for the brake lamp.

I thougt resistors were meant for reducing the power so that leds would not opperate on overload.

It can be used to dim the 3rd brake light for running lamps, then bypassed for bright brake operation, givin that you use the correct resistance.

There might be..but he is trying to make the leds turn on with headlights, and when the brakes are depressed, the leds in the spoiler are brighter.

What about using a relay?

I just came up with this, but never tried it. If more power is delivered to the brake light relative to the regular (dim) taillights, using a relay might just work.

87A to 30 is your normally closed circuit; the LEDs will light up with the taillights.
When the Brake is engaged, the relay will trigger and the LEDs will be powered by a higher voltage and/or current through pin 87 = brighter.

Doesn't this somewhat defeat the purpose of having a CHMSL to begin with? CHMSL is completely optional, but it is generally more noticeable than the dim/bright stop lamps.

I guess you really shouldn't be on the road if you cannot tell the difference between dim and bright though.
