5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The wife and I just got back from a 1500 mile road trip yesterday. On the way home a strange thing happened to my bluetooth connection. My phone rang and I was unable to answer the call using the audio system's bluetooth connection. After I was done with the call I looked at my audio system's display and the bluetooth symbol wasn't there. I pulled off at the next rest area and tried to "pair" my phone to the system again, thinking that might be the problem. It wouldn't work. The system kept saying searching, searching, searching for a minute or so until I finally hit the cancel button on the steering wheel. I tried one more time and the same thing happened. Well, I gave up thinking I would have to take the car back to the dealer. I then shut the car off as my wife and I went inside the rest area to use the facilities. When I got back out and restarted the car, the bluetooth symbol had returned and the bluetooth function was working normally again. It has worked fine after multiple restarts since then. I guess it's like rebooting your home computer when something doesn't load on startup.
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
Mines done that before too, only once. May have had some sort of radio interferance depending on where you were at.

I have had this happen as well. Usually it is when I have something else going on with my phone (Blackberry 8700c). If I am using a data function heavily it will sometimes drop the BT connection and will not re-pair to the car until the car is restarted. I figure what happens is the BT system of the car gets 'hung' by the hard disconnect from my phone and leaves the connection 'open' on the car BT system disallowing additional connections until it is reset by restarting the car.

I have a Motorola SLVR and when this happens (loosing bluetooth connection) it's usually the phone's fault. When it happens I just power cycle the phone and the connection is re-established.

I sometimes have this problem with my the PDA that I use with BT GPS receiver. Sometimes the connection hangs and I cannot pair the receiver and the receiver. I usually end up power cycling both when this happens before I can establish connection again.
I've never tried to pair a phone with anything despite my Motorola E815 supporting Bluetooth.

Give it a try. I have found it very convenient. When driving, getting my phone off my belt holster to answer an incoming call is a pain. The seat belt is usually in the way. Hitting a button on the steering wheel and listening through the audio system is a lot easier.
I have had this happen a few times on my JBL and BT phone link... A call would come in and I could not answer it, actually I was answering it, I was just unable to hear the other person because they heard me. This happend repeatedly because the caller kept calling me back.
I figured it out when it happened again and confirmed the issue when it happened subsequent times.
Basically what happend was this... I cycled the power on the phone after the car/phone were paired. The phone cycled faster than the car dropped the original pair, then the phone searched and found the old pair and connected to it... The car then dropped the original pair and then tried to re-pair with the phone that now was like, 'WTF happened to the other guy?"
This caused a glitch in the actual pair that persisted... The only way to cycle the JBL is to turn off the ignition and get back to the "Welcome to Camry" startup screen, turning of the radio button doees not "re-boot" the JBL... Wanna know why?
Try this sometime... Get into your car, start it and then turn the JBL off. Now turn off the car and restart it with the radio off... Now call your phone number.
With the radio off, it will turn itself on and ring through the car speaker!!!
I was dumbfounded when I found this out as I always thought that turning the radio off would be an exit strategy toward not taking a call with someone in the car who I didn't want to be involved in the call. I realize the "hang-up" button works as Send All Calls, but I was trying to avoid the passenger even seeing the caller-ID display.
While on the JBL topic - I noted another oddity that may be helpful to some. There are actually 2 volume controls maybe a 3rd with SAT (I'm not sure never used SAT). One controls the radio and CD volume, the other controls the AUX volume. I found a few instances where I turned the radio volume to 0 and then listened to the AUX input for a few days... When I went back to the radio, it appeared something was broken because cycling through the MODE button the AUX would have sound but nothing else did. This happened a few times to me and I was WTFing it, then suddenly it started working, not realizing I had adjusted the volume up on only the radio and CD inputs.

I've gone through a very similar discovery process with the system. My biggest beef with the BT is that I can not take a call waiting call using my phones option for 'answer call and disconnect current conversation" because it confuses the JBL BT by trying to cancel a connection. I can take one call and leave the other on hold, then drop the first as soon as the second fully connects.

Not to get back into a TL vs. Camry discussion... But I just learned via the TL that some phone devices do not use BT to their fullest potential. There's often options that BT may or may not accommodate depending on how the phone was configured to use BT... In my case, the signal meter and battery readout are displayed on the information window of the car when BT is active. These look similar to the icons on my phone but are not the same, while looking through the manual to find what the icons mean I noticed a line that states something to the effect, "some features may not work with all BT devices."
So I guess if the phone sends information via BT about signal and battery and may not work with all BT devices, then not all BT is created equal... I never goofed with the call waiting feature, I'll have to try and see what happens, it's possible where my phone sends signal/battery information it also has a feature to support call waiting?
