5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a new 07 SE with the moonroof. I usually tilt the roof open to get some light airflow throughout the car while driving. I am having an issue when trying to close the moonroof after being tilted open:
I'll park the car, put the tranny in Park, then attempt to close the roof by pressing the "Close" side of the moonroof tilt switch. The roof will close, but then immediately opens up again. I have to repeat the process around 3-5 times before it closes and stays closed. Sometimes, I even have to tap the close button quickly until the roof is almost closed while holding the other switch to fully slide it open...and then close it that way (which works). This problem occurs usually with the engine turned on, but I've had it occur with the engine off as well.
Am I doing something wrong? I don't see or feel anything jammed around the edge that would prevent the roof from closing properly. Is it time to schedule my very 1st maintenence call?
This bulletin contains moon roof initialization procedures for 2007 model year Camry vehicles. In the event that a new moon roof housing assembly has been installed or an existing moon roof glass assembly has been reinstalled/adjusted, perform one of the following initialization procedures.

I can't view it, I have to be a paying subscriber or something.
Try this.. it seems to be a common moon roof intialization procedure..
Quote:
If the moon roof does not operate automatically or the jam protection function
does not operate correctly, you should normalize the moon roof.
To normalize the moon roof, push and hold the moon roof switch on the “TILT UP” side until the roof fully tilts up. Then release the switch. Push and hold the switch on the “TILT UP” side until the moon roof tilts up, tilts down, slides openand then closes automatically.
The latest Camry TSB (2006) I saw just stated hold the "TILT UP" until the moon roof opened and closed (approx 20 second)
Quote:
1. Push and hold down the “TILT UP”
side of the switch until the moon roof
tilts all the way up and then tilts down
slightly (approx. 10 mm [0.39 in.] at
the rear).
2. Check for proper operation of the
“one--touch slide open/close” and
“one--touch tilt up/down” functions by
pushing the switch briefly to the
“SLIDE OPEN” and “TILT UP” position.

(a) Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
(b) Make sure that the sliding roof is fully closed.
(c) Push and hold the CLOSE switch or the UP switch until the following movement finishes: Tilt up
→approximately 1 second → tilt down → slide open →slide closed.
(d) Check that the sliding roof stops at the fully closed position.
(e) Finish the initialization.
(f) Check that the AUTO operation works normally

Well, I followed the directions and my car did not react as stated in the directions. The moonroof just stayed tilted open. But, the problem hasn't occurred again since then...

Well, if the problem occur again, just try the reset again.

Just ask your service department to re-initialize it for you. It should be an in the service bay thing and no charge to you. You should be out and on the road again in 15 minutes.
I just did the following and it worked for me.

On the second "Push and hold the switch on the "Tilt UP" side" it took about 10-20 seconds before the intialization procedure started (tilt down, open, close)
