5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am about to buy my first foreign car( forever have been a hot rod guy) at the ripe old age of 65! My choice is a Camry SE V6. I would like to run low 14's at around 104mph in the quarter. Should be attainable as stock seems to be 14.6's. Since I have never messed with these cars, I am at a loss as to where to start. If it was an American V8, I would buy a Hypertech controller and a K@N ram air setup...got a good exhaust guy so that is not a problem. Does anyone make a controller for these cars or a ram air setup?...really don't want to get carried away but would like to know of any basic "tricks" to more power on these cars. Thanks, Ted
There aren't any controllers out there that I'm aware of. The RKSport hood is one of the only ram air hoods out there as of yet. It's more for style than functionality though. It funnels the air from the back of the hood to the front of the car and feeds it straight into the stock intake opening near the grille.
I'd recommend you wait a bit until an intake system is released by a performance company. If you like the ram air setup, you could then modify your hood with a hood scoop and funnel the air to your intake.
Currently there's a drop in K&N filter available for the 07 camrys. I don't have one so I can't comment on any gains it would provide.

That hood is just for looks. NO functionality at ALL.
there MAY be a TRD SC coming out for the 2GR soon. Australia, as far as I know, is realeasing the TRD SC for thier market over there. Guys I know at my local dealer said it SHOULD be coming over this way in the future.

The TRD SC for this country is on hold for now or as one rep said "no rush" I got this info on Friday afternnoon right from TRD.
Send netforcer a pm, he did something to his stock intake. he said that it had two butterfly valves, so he got the one for high rpms to always me open.

I think you guys are missing the point, a ram air hood channels air passing over the hood into the the engine's intake. Whether it provides performance gains is questionable I agree, but how much horsepower it adds if any is not really the critical point that defines a ram-air hood (although it is one of the main goals).
A ram air hood that doesn't provide any performance gains can still be a ram-air hood, it would just be a crappy one. The RKSport hood sucks at it's functionality from a number of points, but the fact that air is channeled (however inefficiently) into the engine compartment makes it a ram-air hood.
btw, I got the hood for it's style. I like how it looks. I didn't even cut the hole that completes the functionality of the hood, they forgot to cut it from the manufacturer. So MY hood is really not a ram-air hood but that doesn't mean all the RKSport "ram-air" hoods aren't ram-air .
As for my signature, I've got Mr.Smiley jacking off cause my ram-air hood was bullshit. The company I bought it from has their heads up their asses. They sent me a defective hood that completely negates any possibility that the hood be functional and only after 3 days of convincing them they finally said "oh, btw, we forgot to cut that last hole".

Third Toyota doesn't target a performance market with the Camry although the 0-60 times for this engine are respectable. I've seen as low as 5.7 seconds and Edmunds publishes a 6.5 second time. Finessing a hard-throttle takeoff that minimizes wheelspin is an elusive ideal.

It's no different than any other transverse v6 engine yet made.
Tune the ignition & valve timings, and adjust the fuel mixture with something like an smt6.
Make a y-pipe that doesn't suck ass.
If you've got money:
Port head heads & unshroud the valves.
Design a working set of long tube headers, and a y-pipe.
The Australian supercharger is not on sale. It was a demonstration only. It is not slated to be brought to their market in any current timeframe that I know of. Which begs the question anyways of, "Why in hell would anyone want a factory Toyota supercharger, after their horrendously bad reliability rating & high retail prices on past transaxle models.".
$400-600 will put enough n2o in that engine to make whatever amount of power you want to make.
Or break out a high end piggyback & slap a turbo on it.
