I hard wire it to the "Assy" wire behind the stereo, or tap into a fuse that is only hot with the ignition on.

I have seen some hard wired to dome lights for easier installation. Plus easier if cord isnt that long. But I dont think it can be done with ignition on only in that location.

I have my Valentine1 hardwired to the power outlet, next to the aux. I pushed the wire into the headliner run it to the driver side, unhooked the A pillar garnish, run the wire down in between the rubber seal and the dash, under the dash to the center console...

I just mount mine on the lower left corner of the windshield.

you can't really see it from outside since the obscure top part of the windshield covers the top of the radar. Also you have to consider that the best place for a radar detector is as high as possible. For the same reason you see high radio towers, the detector antenna needs to be high in the car. You also have the problem of traffic ahead blocking the signal, a high mounting has an advantage because it's up where it can see through the windows of other traffic.
Or you can always get a concealable one like this:
I just bought Car Audio magazine's April 2007 issue today and it has an article on how to custom install a radar detector. They also have a great article on different types of detectors, check it out if you can.
Mine is plugged into the ciggarette lighter from behind. Tapped into the wires and ran a them all around where its not visible and even hid the passport x50 in top of the done lights where its not visible yet practical.
