Gen6 Transmission Question...No, it isn't what you think . . .

Hello everyone,

I just joined ToyotaNation and the Toyota market. As a former Honda/Acura driver, I have a few questions with respect to the "manual-automatic" shifting on the 2007 V6. First off, what is that called? Secondly, a friend of mine has the 2006 Lexus GS300 w/ the same ability and a 6-speed tranny. However, when he switches from pure automatic mode to the manual-automatic mode his car will be in the same gear as it was in the automatic mode, ie. if he switches from auto to man-auto at a stop light his car will be in 1st gear. However, when I switch from auto to man-auto mode I'm ALWAYS in 4th gear. Is everyone's like that or is there a problem with mine? If it isn't a problem, could someone explain why Camry would be different?

By the way, I have the 07 SE V6.

Thank you for your help, and I'm glad to meet you all!

Chip

Basically 4th Gear is not exactly your current Gear. It just show you the Gear limit the transmission will go.
When you are at complete stop the actual gear is at 1st gear even you "switch" up to 6th gear.
With the S mode( auto-man ), the transmission won't change until you reach higher rpm.
In other words, you dont care about conserving your gas and your mpg will drop ^.^

Congrats on the new ride! Welcome to Camry Family!

Sequential shift is the name. 4th is the default gear not too low, not too high, just right

Wow, thank you for the fast response and the polite greeting. So, if I understand what you are saying, no matter when I switch to S-mode, be it from a dead stop or from 70 MPH, it will always show 4th gear on the gear selector and there is no problem with the car? I haven't used it often, but I have switched to S-mode at 50 MPH and it feels like the car actually downshifts to 4th. I just found that odd when comparing it to the Toyota-built Lexus which will switch to 6th gear.

At any rate, I could not be happier with this purchase! I love this car, and, although I haven't owned it that long, I haven't had any of the problems others have mentioned. Super fast too!

Thank you again,

Chip

Yes, it will downshift into 4th whenever you activate the sequential shift.

I always wondered why it always put you in 4th when you slide the shifter to the S mode. I think it should just to what gear you are in, that way you choose to downshift or not. I'd be a little leary on kicking the tranny into S mode while doing 80 on the expressway because it puts you into 4th, it would be nice if it just changed modes, not modes and gear. I wonder if the dealer can change that.

I drop it into S mode all the time to slow down from 75/80 mph. when I need too. No ill effects so far. I've been advised by another member of this site not to do that though.
