Remote start

I was planning on getting a remote start for my car, and still am. I'm not too familiar with them just cuz i've never had them and never had to deal with them b4. How do they exactly work? I mean you start the car but the key's not in the ignition. How does the car continue to run? Someone inform this noobie please.

Im not an expert either, but im assuming that the remote starter is wired up to the starter in the engine bay. But you cant drive the car with the remote start, the second you touch the brake it turns off, or after a certain period of time.

a remote start is typically wired to the ignition key cylinder... it basically takes the place of a normal key, you could call it an "electronic key". a normal key uses mechanically means (the key cylinder) of connecting the various wires that start the car. the remote start is connected to the various wires of the key cylinder basically "hot wiring" the car like in the movies... but obviously you don't have to tear the wires out and you don't have to be near the car.

while were on this subject, what's the difference between a 1-way and 2-way remote start...
I too was looking into this over the winter... but since it's warming up, i might be looking into it for the summer

i believe 2 way, the remote lets you know whats going on with your car, ie: if the glass breakage sensor or spring sensors are going off.. within the allowable range of course

I'm getting my 2 way Remote Starter/Alarm installed right now as i type this. I purchased an AUTOPAGE RS-900 which is the newest unit from AUTOPAGE for 2007. This unit features a 1 mile radius with an LCD remote that confirms commands. It offers alot of other features as well. I paid $210 shipped for the unit off ebay, $50 for the bypass module, and $380 for the install. Only downside is that these bastards are very expensive to install!

But anyways, remote starters for most cars 99-Up require a bypass module in order to function properly. What this module does is pretty straight foward. It needs to be programmed using a chipped key that starts your car. With this programmed info it then writes it to the cars ECU each time the remote start button is pressed which bypasses the factory unit and makes the car think that there is a key in the ignition, so it then can start using the remote start button. Without this module you weould need to leave a key in the ignition at all times in order for this to work. It also in a way acts a saftey feature because say someone was to try and steal the car when it was turned on by remote start, the car would shut off as soon as pressure is applied to the brake to shift gears if there is no key in the ignition. Now once you get into the vehicle after it has been started using the remote start button, just simply take your key and turn the car to the ON position. Don't turn the key so that it cranks the engine again. And then your set to go.

Thats pretty much all there is to it. I'll update later on the price of installation and how i like the unit. Look into this unit though. I have heard nothing but good things about AUTOPAGE, its definitley affordable and looks like high quality stuff so make sure to check it out.

Most shops that install remote starters usually carry them and/or can order them for you. If you know which one you need you can search it online and probably find it cheaper. I got mine from the shop that is installing mine.

becareful with which bypass module they use. Some use the keyless one which can be programmed as stated above. others you will need to leave the key (usually valet key) in the bypass module. From my understanding, if the valet key needs to be left in the module, "smart" shops will shave the key down on both edges so that if a thief were to break into your car and find the key, they can't start the car.

When I searched a while back (for my old tC), the keyless module ran about 50.00 whereas the other module that requires the key was a bit less.
