Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2004 xle, 4cyl. Only 16000 miles. I just noticed a pink powdery residue in the engine front(passenger side) that involve the pulleys and drive belt. It seems to be most concentrated around the power steering pump housing. This pink powder has no moist or oily feel and wipes away easily where I can touch it, like the nearby wiring harness. It looks like the powder from a corroded battery terminal except it is pink and odorless. I know that transmission fluid and coolant are tinted red, but I would think a leak would feel moist and oily. Anyone have a thought?
Water pump? The location make it a perfect candidate for the pink powder. It may be leaking. Take it to the dealer for warranty.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the location is good for the water pump, and I have considered it since the coolant is red. My problem is I have seen leaking water pumps before, and there was always some liquid or moistness to lthe leak, even if most of it burned off. Has anyone seen this pink dry powdery residue and had it confirmed to be a coolant leak?

That Powder Is Dried Coolant Look For Coolant Leaks. You Should Have The Pink Coolant If Im Not Mistaken. Which When Leaks Out, It Makes A Pink Powdery Substance.
I will inspect more closely, especially underneath, for liquid residue. I see no liquid residue up top. Also, even though the car is almost 3 years old, it is garaged and has only 16000 mi.
As long as the purchase date wasn't more than 3 years ago it will be covered under warranty.

my 2005 camry has the same problenm when it reached about 20,000 miles. Took it to the dealer and confirmed water pump leaks. It was still under warranty.
my parents 03 camry had the same thing happen to it.. it was the waterpump.

the powdery residue is dried super long life pink coolant
its most likely a leaking waterpump, as it is a very common failure on gen 5 4 cyl camrys...the waterpump is located directly underneith the alternator, and it tends to leak around the seals or the pulley.
the waterpuump falls under powertrain warrenty, and it get it fixed asap.
if the powdery residue comes from around the resivior bottle, it may be overfilled and leaking
