0w20 to 5w20

changed my oil type at 2000 miles to 0w20, the guy at the dealer said i have to stick with it and wont be able to switch back.

it's a pain in the butt looking for 0w20 (it's not sold at most places). so i thinkin of switching to 5w20 since spring is almost here around MD.

is it possible?

One, he's full of it. You can 20 weight is 20 weight. Secondly, Amsoil www.amsoil.com just came out with their Group IV based 5w-20 oil. You won't find a better oil. Mobil 1 also just released their Extended Performance 5w-20 oil which is also a good oil that's just a hair under the Amsoil as far as quality. Both oils are superior for extended drain intervals, especially the Amsoil. Redline also makes a 20weight oil that's wonderful, but it's on the high side and it's a group V oil with full PAO. Full PAO may not be good for seals. It's never been proven and the Redline is only good for moderately long drain intervals. Regualr Mobil 1 and Penzoil Platinum are both good synthetics, but they recently switched from a group IV oil down to a group III oil, which means that by law they are allowed to call it fully synthetic, but it has a petroleum base stock.

The best way to find out how long you can go with a certain oil is to do an oil analysis. Each product is different though so each oil analysis will only be valid for that grade and brand of oil. It costs about $20 for an analysis and it will tell you whether or not the oil can be used longer than what you did use it for.

Toyota recommends that the oil be changed at 7500 miles for normal driving (check the maintenance manual that came with the car for difference between normal and severe driving conditions). Some oils such as Mobil 1 or other synthetic can probably go that long or even longer.

This is the best place to find out more about oil that I have found: BITOG http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/ubbthreads.php

Very good website. bobistheoilguy is a great site. As stated above, the only way to know for sure is to do oil analysis. You may be able to find on the website referenced above approximately how long you can go. I would venture to say that 10k oil changes shouldn't be a problem at all. Amsoil is good for up to 25k and Mobil 1 up to 15k. I normally do a filter change at the 5-7500k mark on my vehicles. My Nissan Titan's oil is changed once a year. Oil analysis says I can go longer, but I'm happy with that. I just passed the 3k mark on the Camry so I don't have any data yet. I just received my box of Amsoil 5w-30. The guy I usually get my oil from signed me up for a preferred customer for free. I don't quite understand why he would since he sells it for dealer cost anyway, but he's quick and is a nice person at least in cyberspace and on the phone

Amsoil just came out with a 0w20 that has better numbers than their 5w20 and Mobil 1 5w20.
I just went with that in our RAV4 I4.

Sorry, that was a misquote, however I did mention it was their new Group IV based oil rather than the XL series Group III oil.
