How Difficult to Remove Metal Gas Filler Pipe?

Hello All:

Autozone diagnosed the reason for my check engine light to be on is due to poor seating of the gas cap and metal filler neck. There is some corrosion on the metal lip surface. How difficult is it to remove the pipe in order to wire wheel it smooth (don't want to perform on car with fumes and all) or should I just replace with a new one? Does one approach pipe through the trunk or from underneath behind wheel well? Thanks for any insight or advice that may help!

Gotta love the Autozone diagnosis

Anyhow, if you want to do this repair, don't use a wirewheel, just some good sandpaper will smooth that down and use alittle silicone spray on the rubber seal of the gascap. I have done it this way on maybe 10 cars and never had a comeback.

If you do want to pull the neck assy, it's really not that difficult and you won't need any special tools to do the job.

Can you take a pic of what your referring to? I think I have an understanding but want to be 100% sure. But you can plug the gas hole with a rag or something to block it and sand it smooth but the problem might return. Are you sure your gas cap isn't just closed properly?

Might plug the filler pipe with rags and hand sand with water and water proof paper. The pipe should come out easy enough though, see what Toyota wants for one or find a junk yard. Or try doubling up on the cap gasket and see what happens, the dealer should have them.
