5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a questions for you regarding the MPG difference between an i4 and V6. If I recall correctly you originally had an i4 and recently upgraded to a V6. And since you mostly likely drove the same routes with both cars, I'm hoping that you can give me an idea of how much better the fuel economy was on the i4. Also, do you feel the power upgrade is worth the lose in fuel efficiency.
I'm planning on purchasing an SE in April but I can't decide between the two. Thanks in advance and if anyone had a similar experience as Old Dood please feel free to comment...
I was getting over 30mpg with the I4. My best was 36mpg but that was purely "milking it". The best I have gotten out of the V6 is 28mpg. City wise with the V6 about 20-22mpg if we are not running it hard. The I4 in the city I was getting a solid 25mpg.

But if you must know I did not PM Old Dood because this was not a personal question and I figured others might be also trying to decide between the i4 and V6.

Thanks for the prompt reply...the difference doesn't seem all that great when you consider 100+ additional horses.

I drove an I4 around for awhile with the saleman in the front seat and my wife in the back. Having to put my foot to the floor every time I left a stop light was not a good thing. The v6 is really overkill for the vehicle. Kinda wish they had something in between, but once youve' driven the v6 you won't even consider the 4. Mileage just isn't that much different, and the car is quieter on the road.

I never had to floor at stop lights....what was your previous car?

Hybrid? though they could cost more than a V6

I tested the V6, I own an I4 now

I couldn't tell the diff between the two when cruising....
My previous car was a Toyota Echo. It had a 4-banger making just 108 horsepower. And I still attacked any object which moved across the horizon.
With the auto tranny, the Echo did 100km/h in something like 10 seconds flat.
Last summer I was back in my country, and I rented this mid-size Fiat sedan which weighed 1500kg, but only had a 68 horsepower engine. And again, I was able to attacked everything and everyone with that car.
And here you are (at least some of you), complaining about a 158-horse modern mid-size sedan. If I had 158 horsepower available to me, I would put it to good use without ANY problems at all. If you plan and implement your moves on the highway, you can safely attack BMWs with 158 horsepower.
The 3.5L V6 is COMPLETE overkill for this car. In the few days when I drove my Camry before it went to the body shop, I honestly never went over 3000rpm with my car. I just never use this 268 horsepower!!!

Base on your expression above I thought you would own a I4 but NO...you own a V6!!!
If you think 158 hp was more than enough then why did you buy a V6?

GdanaHer...you didn't consider the hybrid...it's smack in the middle with 190ish horses.
I'm with lammydi. I've driven a 4 banger in various bodies for the last 10 years. I said the next car I get will be a V6.
....Haven't regreted the discision yet.

well, you could've started something like... "MPG: I4 vs V6.....does anyone here drive a v6 now that used to have a 4cyl, if so, could you give us what the gas mileage was for your last car compare to your current car?"
Doesn't the hybrid have a detuned i4 that only produces 147hp...the additional 40hp is from the electric motor...but both motors will never work together to give you the 187hp...
I test drove all three cars V6, i4 and hybrid and the hybrid is by far the slowest of the three...

I too wished there was something between the 4 and 6 when I was buying my Camry. The 4 is sooooo weak! What's good about the 6 is that I barely press the pedal down to get going at nearly any speed. I'd characterize the 6 as "effortless". There's no way I could live with the 4!!!!!
