Synthetic oil problem?

Ok guys,
I have noticed the last 3000 miles or so my 05 Camry has developed a tick at idle. It never goes away, and seems like it is only at idle. The car has line 34,000+ miles on it.
I never really noticed it till I switched to Mobil one synthetic. It may have started before but I just didn't notice.
Then I was told on this form to try Penzoil Platinum. So I did. After some 400 miles it hasn't changed.

I took it to Toyota last week. There is like 10 mechanics that work there. They all tried to figure out what the ticking was. Then after giving up they told me to bring it back Monday when their best mechanic would be back from vacation.
Well they kept the car for 2 days, got it back yesterday. They said checked everything they could think of. Valves were all perfectly within specs. I just wonder if it is synthetic in general?
They said whatever it is it's nothing serious, just drive and enjoy.
And if I ever figure it out to call and let them know, yea right!
So after paying $102 for a cabin filter and nothing else, here I am back where I started.
Anyone have any thoughts before I go back to regular oil?

It's not uncommon for Mobil 1 to make your engine have more noise according to the oilheadss at http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...eads.php?Cat=0 (bob is the oil guy forum)

I went from Mobil 1 to Amsoil and things are good.

It's hard to find amsoil here. I think i may be able to though. I used it for years in my motorcycle (before i moved) and wouldn't use nothing else. What weight do you use and how often do you change it?

You can buy it online.
Become a Preferred Customer and get 20-25% off.
I use 5w30 and change it every 8-9K.
According to Amsoil,I can go a lot more but I'd rather just do the 8-9K miles.

I just tried the new Amsoil EAO series nanofiber oil filters.
Pricey but overkill for my 8-9K.
They're made for at least 15K miles.

On ordering Amsoil if you become a preferred customer($10 for 6 months) you're better off calling in an order.
It's comes faster.

I use Royal Purple for my synthetic oil. It is equivalent to Amsoil. See if Royal Purple available in your area.

I think I did see Royal Purple at O'Reilly's auto parts.
Might give it a try.
What is your all's thoughts on leaving the Penzoil Pl. in the care for 2000 more miles? I hate to keep wasting oil. It would really suck to pay the high cost of RP or Amsoil and still have the ticking noise. It is not real loud but you can hear it sitting in the car at idle.

As long as you don't go back and forth between conventional oil and syncthetic...in my opinion you should be fine for 2000 more miles.
By the way, is the ticking noise similar to the "knocking" engine noise people refer to when you use 87 octane gas? I use 91 octane for this reason. I know that most people telling me that I don't need to use 87 octane but I want to give my car the best stuff I can afford. By going from 87 to 91 I will only spend around $200 more in gas for the whole year. To me, it worth it. Also, it is a good practice to stay with the same gasoline company. I use Shell most of the time.

Same thing in my mom's '05. I was worried untill I talked with my friend about this. And yes, he is the top Car person I know.

He said it is not an issue. I forgot the exact reasoning he said. Something about the flow through the oil pickup or pump if I recall. But it's nothing to worry about he said. but yeah, I know exactly what you mean about the sound.

Hey did your mom switch to synthetic when the ticking started on her 05?
I guess it is nothing worth worring about. But things like that drive me nuts. I guess I'll learn to live with it.

It sounds like one of them old wind up clocks. tick tick tick. There is no knock at all. It sounds fine when you give it a little gas (fast idle).

Might give the Royal P a try next time. I do hate to go back to the old stuff after switching to synthetic.

^ I'm the one that actually switched to Syn cause my dad refuses to change the oil once but every 10k miles, haha. And yes, noise stated at that point. I'll ask my friend tonight what his reasoning was. He still uses Mobile 1 Syn in his sports cars (330hp MR2, 750hp Supra)

I know what you guys talked about and Ive heard multiple issues could be from this noise.

1. which was said the oil going and recieving making the tick noise, which is just the oil pump i believe...
2. Because the oil is more slick the cam is taping the valves a little harder and the car needs a slight retune....first time ive heard but my friends accord had that happen.
3. Its something that happens when you switch to synthetic oil and just gotta live with it.

Do your camry a favor and do not go back to regular oil. Try a another brand of synthetic and give it a chance. Many oil experts agree on one thing; synthetic oil is a vast improvement over regular dino.

PP or Valv ML

I read that Penzoil Platinum and Valvoline Maxlife were two oils that could help with the ticking. That was for another type of car though, Corvette I think. That guy switched to PP and it worked for him. (He had been using M1.)

PP is a great oil, better than the M1 I think. I haven't started using it in my new Camry yet, but I will soon. (only 1300 miles so far)
