5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I was wondering if anybody else with an 07 has noticed it's harder to close the trunk lid than on older generation Camrys? It does take a bit of effort. I mentioned this to my dealer and they said that "all 07's are like this. Toyota is trying to make the car as air tight as possible and this is a side effect of that." This sounds like a load of something coming out of the southbound end of a northbound horse, but since it's not really a major issue, I haven't really pursued it. I can adjust it myself if it continues to bother me. I was just wondering if anybody else has noticed this.

I noticed when I had a loaner Gen 5.5 the trunk was easier to open and close. I pretty much gave it my normal push open and it went flying upward. Not sure if that I believe the dealer's justification... You are prob. correct in your assumption.
To me it's not really a big deal... I do notice though when I put the RK Sport spoiler on, when remotely opening the trunk it doesn't pop up as much. Probably due to the extra weight of the spoiler vs. a stock one.
i've experienced the same problem with my camry as well. it takes a bit of effort closing my trunk probably because of the extra weight of the factory spoiler. but im used to it so no worries for me.
I don't have the spoiler on my car and it still seems like it's hesitant to close. On my old car and on my mothers Gen 5, you could just push the lid down and it would close. My gen 6 definitely takes more effort to close the trunk lid.
I just read the thread and I'm going to chalk it up to a simple function of geometry and physics. My last car was a 99 and trunk lid was longer, or the rear edge was farther away from the hinge--the pivot point. I'm guessing that because the distance is less from the hinge to the 'push point', it takes more effort to close. If the lid was quite long, it might almost close itself.

"People who think they know it all are particularly irritating to those of us who do."
I've noticed the same issue. I've closed the trunk from a fully open position and had it bounce back up. Another thing that bugs me when I close my trunk is the license plate holder slams against the trunk when I close it and makes a loud bang. I think I can fix that with some felt tape though.

What is it with you guys sometimes? So suspicious and doubtful of anything a "dealer" tells you.
Take a look at your trunk and user your "brain" to recognize that there is very sturdy weatherstripping along the entire rim of the trunk. This is there for reasons of insulation against noise and also to effectively seal out carbon monoxide fumes from entering the car both at this present time and also 10 years from now. These two areas of design are where cars manufacturing is exceling these days -- safety reasons and a quieter ride.
A similar concept has been applied to the new Mercedes Bluetec diesel car that has totally sealed the engine underhood area. This design is to isolate the interior of the car as much as possible from the noise of the engine or exhaust, especially from a diesel which is usually a bit noisier than a gas-powered vehicle.
I would suggest buying a couple of small 10 - 25lb barbells or dumbells and then try lifting them a few times a day to build up the muscles in your arms so that closing the trunk might not be such a hardship for you. Your significant other might appreciate that too! :-)

Well hmm I can tell you on my old Gen 5 it was the same as my Gen 6. Just depends where you push down at. I have learned not to push my trunk down on the sides and right in the middle both cars did that. So it is not hard for me to close mine I guess.
