5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've seen a few posts about not buying extended warranties from the dealer etc... or perhaps saying what was and wasnt reasonable for an extended warranty.
Here's what I was offered with my Quote via Email.
Lakeith! Your prices given you are way too high. Remember, you do NOT have to purchase the Toyota extended warranty from the same dealer that you purchased your vehicle. Moreover, you have up until 3yr/36k to finally buy your Toyota extended warranty giving you ample time to look around. For me, I was investigating all my purchases prior to bringing me new 2007 V6 Camry LE home this past Thursday. During my vehicle purchase I read all the tips and tricks posted on all the various Toyota forums (this includes Toyotanation.com and edmunds.com amongst others). My dealer, QueensboroToyota in New York wanted $995 for the genuine Toyota 7yr/100k/$0-deductable provided I paid for it prior to taking delivery of my Camry. Knowing this and having an idea of GreenfieldToyota's price I roundabout told Queensboro Toyota I could do better via the web and if he wanted to sell me the extended warranty he would have to beat (not match as I am a New Yorker and typically never pay retail and love to haggle). As a result I went with Greenfield Toyota...give Troy Deitrich a call at (413)772-0231 and tell him Steve W. from NYC referred you. BTW, I got my 7yr/100k/$0deductable for $880 which was the best I could personally find...depending how much you want to look and how lucky you are with "the gift of gab" you might do better than I. All you have to do is fax Troy a copy of your bill of sale and current mileage and give him a credit card number.

If you search the discussions here you will find one that gives the name of a salesman and dealership in MA which will sell the 7/100/0 to you for 880 bucks.

The salesman and dealership gdanaher mentioned in Massachusetts is the same person, Troy Deitrich .....WWW.toyotaofgreenfield.com, 12 Olive Street, Greenfield, Massachusetts 01301. Until the 2007 model year I believe he was charging $660 according to Edmunds but I guess with Toyota using the new 6-speed automatic for the V6 and the 5-speed CVT automatic for the I4 I am assuming they want more just in case the new tranny's come in for warranty work. I never intended to purchase the extended warranty but after reading all of the stuff about the 3rd geard to 4th "flare" on the 6-speed I wimped out. Been burned too many times in the past for 1st year models.

The other place which sells extended warranty at dealer cost is Midwest Toyota Superstore. I would not buy an extended warranty from anyone other than Midwest or Greenfield. I guess you could take their quotes and get your local dealer to match the price, but I personally feel that is unfair to those two dealers. They gave you the best quote, therefore they should get your business. JMHO.

Like yourself I am sure we are both pretty handy and mechanically talented but there comes a time when as we age do we (?) really want to replace constant velocity joints when the boots finally tear? They are pretty simple by design but I personally am getting on in years. The cv joint by itself typically costs $100 plus core charge for each side and the typical cost of $300-400 total is for labor. But imagine having to do it in the dead of winter jacking up the front, using your collection of pickel forks to remove the tie rod and the horrible lower ball joint just to remove the old cv joint. In my heyday I could probably do it in a hour but I'm pushing 60 years old and everything on my body is going to hell...eyesight is shot, can hardly see navigating around the house at night to go to the bathroom, and whatnot. I still take on the easy stuff which for me is oil and spark plug changes, possibly brake pads, calipers, hoses belts, and even the radiator if I can find the damn tools. When you get to reach retirement age like myself working on a new car should be a joy and not dreaded labor. We've all worked hard to get where we are and the money save in preparation for retirement should be used when appropriately. How's everyone else feel about this?

The prirce to beat for an 07 Camry with a 7 year, 100k mile, zero deductible warranty seems to be 880 dollars. If anyone can beat that, let us all know with the details. If your local dealer can beat it, tell him he might sell quite a few. 1130 isn't beating 880.

By the time you're out of warranty, the engine's will be worth $1500, the transmissions $900.
Complete waste of money. Won't over-come the depreciation of your investment.

Think about what you are saying...when the car is finally out of warranty and say you've put on the normal milage of 40 thousand miles. Book value of your ride should be around $16k minimum. How can you come out publically with your statements? Two visits to the dealer in NYC alone will justify the price of the extended warranty considering you get a free loaner and trip interruption. Looking at it from another perspective...you make $40/hour at your normal workplace and once the 4/yr/36k expires you would lose at least 8 hours renting a replacement vehicle, taking time off work, chasing down a good repair facility....at minimum you are out $500/occurance
