07 LE (New) gas milage sucks

New 'O7, with the 4 cyl emmisions engine.

City is running around 18mps, just 1100 miles though.

Just got 1st oil change (dealer done).

18mpg is pretty bad, even during a "break in" period.

Anyone else out there seen this?

Can anyone give me info. on what their "break in" time was on their engine, and when mileage may have improved?

Thanks a bunch----

Why did you change your oil at 1100 miles?? Or did I read that wrong.

My first tank of gas lasted me 46x miles and I filled 14.5 gallons or so when the pump stopped.

My average is 32MPG, highest is 35 MPG, and lowest is 27 MPG.

I know this is about gas milage ... but how can you we judge whether or not your MPG is high or low .... we have no idea how you drive, or the driving conditions.

I am getting better than that in my V6 ... so it is hard to tell why you are getting crappy milage.

As for the oil change at 1100 miles ..... why? Toyota says 5000 miles, if your dealership told you to change it at 1000 miles, they just ripped you off unless the oil change was free. Not to mention some manufacturers put in special additives to help the engine and by changing the oil too early you could cause some long term damage by removing it.

During engine break in, it is advisable (though not everyone does this) to get the oil changed between 500 and 1000 or so miles to remove break in shavings (ring debris) from the oil.

Also, many folks also do another change within 2000 miles of this first change also, for the same reason.

Found out that the factory fill from Toyota is a synthetic blend oil, and on the 1st change, they use Mobil (5W-20) clean (also a blend), along with something they called a "clean" additive.

Strange I thought.

Watchcrazy -

Service guy at the dealer said the change was "a good idea", he knew something about engines.

Also, the change was free, though I do all my own changes on my other cars, have for years, wiith synthetic and top of the line filters (or factory, in the case of my BMW).

I heard the 6 cyl. gets great MPG, maybe I shoulda got that!

Tried changing the oil @ 2,500 but service guy said "Toyota uses a special break in oil that shouldn't be changed until the engine reaches 5,000 miles".

Yep.

Fill the tank right to the rim, drive down to DC to glad hand your Congressman, drive back, and never get over 65 on the interstate. Fill it up again to the rim and calculate. That ought to give you an idea about highway mileage and the city will come along depending upon your traffic, idle times, and degree of lead footedness.

It takes time to break in an engine and all the other moving parts like wheel bearings. Everything turning is causing a little drag which impacts mileage. First new car?

I also got questionable mileage wiht my SE V6 Camry. I did a 1600-kilometer trip in 48 hours, and my average speed was around 65MPH. Top speed that I did was 80MPH for passing purposes. Low-revs all the time...

Whatever...I don't expect good mileage out of a full-size sedan. Besides, the Camry still got amazing mileage compared to our ML500. 5L V8 moving 2300KG of metal...you can guess how the mileage is in that thing. You can run the A/C or not, have 1 person or 5...it's always bad.

@ Yazovets:

If 65 isn't working for you try 80+; it's worked well for me.

What, you mean the car will actually run more efficiently at a HIGHER speed? I'm due in court over a 3-point speeding ticket from March. I don't need another one!

TOYOTA DOES NOT USE BREAK IN OIL AND CHANGING IT WILL NOT CAUSE DAMAGE!

Toyota does use synthetic blend! That's one reason the oil change interval is 5,000 miles! Read the owner's manual before you pass bad information on to other people. Regular oil does not meet Toyota's oil specifications.

As far as the fuel mileage goes...

You are in New Jersey and it's cold. That takes away fuel mileage.

Your car is new, it takes several thousand miles to break in. Actual miles depends on the car, weather, driving conditions, driver, etc, ect, ect...

Relax, you will probably have it broken in my summer and notice your fuel mileage will be much better.

I'm currently in Minnesota and my Camry uses more fuel than when I'm in the Carolinas.

You picked a great car and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

EDIT: Never fill your car to the "rim" as suggested above. Let it click off and call that done. Round it up if you have OCD or something. Filling it to the top will only cause problems with you evaporative system (fuel vapor recovery system). You could cause an excessive amount of fuel to enter from the top of the filler neck and ruin a very expensive charcoal canister. Seriously, many people don't know that but it's true.

Where did you get this information? I haven't found anything in the manual that says this.

I'm not calling you a liar but it's pretty much your word against that of a Toyota Service rep who denied my business because of this break in oil.
