5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Some say that the Japanese assemblers are better than those in the states. Honestly though, they use the same parts and the same equipment, so they should be the same.
I guess if you want to hang a charm from the hook on the rear chassy, go with Japan-built.
The parts are the same. It's down to fit and finish, Some say Japan does a better job. Mine was Kentucky built and my F&F are fine. I have a transaxle problem.

Go for the Japan built. Fit and finish are unmatched. I have an 02 le(japan built) over 100,000+ miles, and she runs like a champ! My cousin on the other hand has my old 02 se(us built) has a few problems. like the brakes. the type of brakes they use are done quickly.
I would say go for Japan built if possible, but I'm sure the US built ones are still perfectly acceptable. I don't have experience with Toyota but when I went shopping for an Accord with my aunt - the used Accords we test drove that were built in the US were rattle traps. She found a Japan built one and it's as solid as a rock.
My aunt's Avalon is built in the US..seems well built to me. The interior is showing much more wear than I would expect for a car that is 1.5 years old but that is something she'll have to take up with Toyota.

As far as I know, they're pretty much equal. Your decision may be driven more by availability, and what's on the dealer's lot. Personally if I had to choose between Japan or KY built Camry, I'd go with the KY built one (but I'm a bit biased)
The Toyota dealer in Lexington (closest to the KY plant) seemed to have about a 50/50 mix of Japan & US built Camrys, just from looking at about 1/3 of their stock. I think they also just started production in Lafayette, Indiana at the Subaru plant, but I'm not yet sure how to distinguish those from the KY built cars.

Just silly ... who cares where it is built. As far as I am concerned it is a Toyota whether it was built in the US or Japan. I have a lot better things to do with my time than trying to locate the exact car I want, then having to see if it was made in the US or Japan.
I think it might boil down to availability. I doubt the dealerships even know where the cars are made until they actually show up. I doubt they go in and order 10 cars and say I want 5 made in Japan and 5 made in the US, but I am not in the car business, so I don't know for sure.
for reference, i had a 95 japan built camry sedan before that got totalled.
i replaced it with a 95 american built coupe. differences? american built one had a broken handle

Japan for the best fits and far less rattles and squeaks.
I believe that's true.
Our RAV4 doesn't have any crackling, creaks or rattlesand it's made in Japan.
My daughters IS 250 is the same and made in Japan.
Can't complain too much about the Camry but it does have the crackling interior noises, especially when weather is cold and the crackling noises have gotten worse but have leveled off.
Go for a JP built one if you have the choice. And that was actually told to me BY some of the guys at the Toyota dealer (who actually own and buy Toyota's).

5 Lug Corolla WHAT?
....and there are some fine parts differences between JA and USA built cars. Check the parts lists. Interior stuff especially often does not interchange. Doesn't the JA Camry have hook fittings in the front bumper or is that the Rav4?
