5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey all. Yesterday, I brought my Camry SE in for it 15k mile update. I also told the guys there that I noticed an acceleration lag. For those of you who got the Camry early, you may notice that when you are slowing down and accelerating again, you feel a slight thrust forward after the tachometer revs up. This is, from what Toyota tells me, an early model transmission problem. If this applies to you, you should have it replaced. My car is under warranty and Toyota is replacing my entire transmission for free.
That aside, I was given a rental vehicle (free). I got the 2007 Avalon, Limited edition. VERY smooth ride and made me wish I got this car..until I saw the price tag. Fully loaded is about $37-39k. Ouch! I know for a fact that Avalons and Camrys use the same exact engine if it's the V6. However, the acceleration on the Avalon is incredibly noticeable versus my Camry. When I just tap the gas, it flies! As with my Camry, I accelerates a lot slower. And no, my Camry has no VSC. Is this right?? I feel jipped with my Camry after driving this Avalon. Specs-wise, only the interior should be different, and the performance/fuel economy are listed as the same. I need to talk to the dealer again...late trade-in? Is that do-able?
Well, other than the age thing with the Avalon, has anyone who's test-driven both a Camry V6 and Avalon V6 noticed an acceleration/performance difference?
I've driven the Avalon - it's a waste of money. It looks pretty bad to me, and costs more just because you get a few more electronic gadgets. It's no bigger than the Camry, so there's no passenger or cargo space advantage. It's no faster, and it's no more fuel efficient. About the only "advantage" I found on the Avalon was that you can get factory HIDs. That is it.
If Toyota intends to actually be competitive with the Avalon, then they should transplant the 380hp 5.7L V8 from the Tundra. THEN the Avalon will have a new customer base.

Also you get memory seats, power retractable sunshade, laser cruise control, more hip room, shoulder room, head room, EPA Passenger volume Avalon: 106.9, Camry: 101.4, and much more.

Actually there is more passenger space in the Avalon than the Camry, check out the rear seats. The nav on the Avalon sucks big time compared to the Camry.

LOL Nav is irrelevant. It is for direction-impaired persons, or persons seeking the "bling-bling" factor of having a screen inside their car. Biggest waste of $2000 ever.
Could've bought a HID kit, tinted the car, and got a set of winter tires instead for the same money.

I've test driven the '07 Camry V6 and regularly drive an '05 Avalon V6. Both have the same 3.5L V6 but the Camry has the 6spd auto. I thought they both accelerated similarly. To me, I think the Avalon "feels" faster just because it's so much bigger. If you're in the position to trade your car in for an Avalon, go for it!
I love the Avalon. Would I buy one? Hell yeah. The reason why most Avalon owners are older is because they can afford it. Do you really think most younger people can afford a 27-30K car? Most people end up with Corollas, which can cost quite a bit once you add on a few options. There was a thread about this a while back (Camry vs. Avalon) and it was very amusing.
BTW, I think it's a stupid idea to have a huge engine put in the Avalon. It's already fast as hell. People buying the Avalon are NOT looking for a nimble crazy fast sports car.

I heavily considered the Avalon when it first came out with the redesign. It is not faster than the Camry...it is merely a mental thing based upon the ride and size of the car. Same engine, heavier car, different gearing...do the math.
I love the Avalon, but the Camry is more what I wanted and I LOVE my Cam.

lol the avalon is a grandpa car... i mean c'mon that thing is HUGE, it's like a buick... if you're gonna get an avalon, you may as well go the whole nine yards... get a hat, a pair of white shoes, and move down to florida ;-)
