Anyone else have bad outer edge wear on front tires?
I had some really bad outer edge wear on my front tires. Had the dealer do an alignment at no charge of course. After alot of haggling, I convinced Toyota to buy me two new Toyo Proxes, Since thats what came on the car, at 20,000 miles. Schweet!!!

As a ASE certified mechanic you would probably know more about tire wear than the average layman. From looking at your pic's I would have guessed you were running the tires with the minimum tire pressure recommended by Toyota (31psi). Further looking at the pic's this assumption would have been wrong simply because the center treads are also completely "gone". The outer edge is definitely wearing faster than the inner edge (closest to brake rotor). Provided you have been rotating your tires every 5k as recommended by Toyota I would use your new alignment to baseline from. I hope this isn't what I look forward to on my 2007 V6 Camry LE!

The center rib on these Proxes is VERY Shallow, they were gone by 6,000 miles. The tires have always been adjusted to proper inflation every week, and rotated every other oil change. The cause of the outer edge wear was from excessive "Toe In" of course the dealer tried telling me that Toe would not cause tire wear, But trust me, it does so I asked to see the before specs and they were way off.

If you do NOT mind my asking, do you drive in a "spirited" manner? I couldn't help but notice in your sig you have a V6 SE and typically owners of the SE variant want something a little more sportier than the usual family Camry. Since I came off a '99 Crown Victoria with the performance and handling package I completely understand the ocassional need to let loose. This is my 3rd FWD vehicle and as front wheeled drive vehicles go they are strictly family vehicles. Though I'm the boss in the family I'm sad to report my wife wears the pants hence this Camry was chosen over my quest for another rear wheel drive vehicle.

I dont speed, Light acceleration, light braking, slow turns, I average 27-28 MPG. No spirited driving here.

I once had both rear tires (aftermarket performance) wear like that down to the wire in under ten thousand. They of course complained that I didn't rotate at 5K but I reminded them that the tires were aligned when I bought them and both were exactly even so it was certainly an error on their tech's part. When they checked, both were set to the same incorrect numbers and agreed it was unlikely I knocked both out of alignment by the same amount. So I got the new tires. Guess it happens but I heard the strange whine while driving back from a 10 hour trip and was really glad I didn't lose one. (I check much more often now for wear.) BTW, my front tires wear the outer edges off pretty fast too, but I KNOW why that is!
Which brings me to the point why I always set my tire pressure to 35psi all around. I believe Camry spec calls for 30psi front, 32 psi rear. I've had over 7 Crown Victoria's during my lifetime, a Chevy Celebrity, Ford Windstar, Chevy Malibu Station wagon, and over 6 old style Chevy Impalas. Every one of these cars almost always had outer edge wear even when I meticuously retotated tires every 7k. Unless there is something weird something weird with New York City streets but the only way I've been able to maintain even tire wear was to run all the tires at 35psi which is still within manufacturer's spec. What I don't like is from looking at the pic's above the outboard edge sppears to be extremely worn compared to the inboard edge.
While we are on the subject can anyone let me know if it's adviseable to cross tires on the Camry FWD vehicle? The owner's manual states to only move front to back but opinions vary. Many people state the technology of the radial tires have improved such that you no longer need to worry about tread separation inherent when you cross tires in the old days. Anyone?.....

Cross the fronts to the back, Then move the backs straight forward to the front.

Your Tires Look Just Like My Bridgestones. My Dealer Did Align Mine In Dec. Under Warranty Even Though I Hit Something With My Right Front And Noticed Increased Wear Evenly Across The Tire. I Even Told Them I Hit Something And They Still Covered It, Strange!!?? They Seemed To Really Begin To Wear Both Fronts After The Alignment. Tires Are Shot At 25k !!! The Only One With Good Amounts Of Tread Left Was On The Left Rear And It Has Developed A Wine. I Now Rotated It To The Right Front To Help In The Rain. Any Thoughts Anyone????? I RUN ABOUT 32 TO 35 PSI ALL AROUND
