Gen5 Muffler Install

Thinking of getting some new mufflers for my gen5 camry.
Are they relatively simple to install? or does it require special tools?

Thanks

Depends if you have a universal muffler or an axle back. Axle back will be an exact fit, key word suppose to be, if and only if you have a model specific axle back. IF not you would have to chop off your muffler after the flange, and somehow weld the new muffler to the pipe you just chopped off.

If you are talking about the universal mufflers that only add sound and nothing else then yes your gonna need a welder. If you don't have access to them your local welding/muffler shops should have them ie Midas etc. My friend got one installed for 80 dollars, so that should give you an estimate.

Well the dealer said the muffler is a direct replacement and no welding needed.

so it should be DIY-able, thanks guys

If its a direct bolt on then it is an axel back or a catback exhaust. Not a muffler.

you nailed it. I think, well at least from what poohbear is saying, he will be purchasing an axle back.

So i'm a noob at this but can someone clarify what's the difference between muffler and a axel back? i thought everything after the exhaust pipe is the muffler...

The dealer said that this sportivo muffler has the same fittings as original bolt on flange...

Thanks guys...

^ this has already been said in tangerine and my posts. BUt to clarify even more. Muffler is the actual muffler body component. Axle back includes the piping and hanger bars allowed to make the install a a direct bolt on. Mufflers need to be welded on because they have nothing but the actualy muffler canister. For example. if you buy a magnaflow muffler you will have to get it welded on. ON the other hand, TRD has an axle back which is the direct bolt on.

A regular muffler should look like this

A catback exhaust should look like this:

The main differences would be the extra piping that were made to be a direct bolt on to the existing mounts.

The muffler shown above is just one type of the muffler, there is a chambered, straight through as well as a twin loop.
