Yes, the added amp to aftermarket speakers is very well worth the extra work and cost. With the headunit, wiring and equipment, my cost was under $1500 total with me installing the equipment myself, and making my own speaker baffles (not including security system).
I got my CE back in December or '07, and was very disappointed in the audio quality. I also have the '03 XLE V6. I did relatively the same thing in the '03, with a few minor exceptions. I felt the '03 needed something better than the '07 since it's an XLE, so I installed Kappa Perfect 6.1 all the way around. So here's what I did to my '07...
Installed Alpine iDA-X100 with the full speed iPod cable, usb input, and 3.5 mm aux cable. Great head unit, but not as good as my previous CDA-7878 or CDA-7998.
Installed 4 pairs of Infinity Kappa 60.7cs components in all speaker locations. I mounted the tweeters about 2 inches away from the mids. I made my own speaker baffles using 3/4" MDF wood. I've always used MDF wood. My experience with plastic speaker baffles is, when you turn up the sound, the plastic may start to rattle.
Installed Kicker ZX700.5 Amp mounted to the back of the rear seat with a JL Audio 700 Watt Power Amp Kit.
Installed 1 10" Xtant subwoofer... I don't like a lot of bass, but I need a good amount to compliment the quality of sound.
Finally, if you're going to do audio upgrades, you've gotta have security. I paid a shop to install the Python 990 with remote start. I couldn't do it myself due to time constraints.
Starting from scratch, this was an entire weekend project from Friday after work through late Sunday night. But this upgrade makes my 2 hour daily drive to work much better than before.
