Gen5 Drive Belt Tensioner

I have a 2002 Camry LE (2AZ-FE) with 91,000 miles. I want to change my serpentine belt but the shop manual says that I need the Toyota special tool #SST 09249-63010. I went to Auto Zone and rented their serpentine belt tool but I can see that it is not going to work because you need to be able to get behind the belt tensioner and there just isn’t enough room. Does anyone know how else to relieve the tension from the belt tensioner or where I can get my hands on this special Toyota tool #SST 09249-63010?

Get a regular size 19mm 6pt socket with 1/2 drive and a breaker bar. That fits right on the tensioner. It helps to have someone help you out because it takes quite a bit of force to move it.

With the breaker bar sticking out the top of the engine bay, pull the bar towards the front of the car to remove tension from the belt.

I thought you just loosen the alternator bolt to release the tension then go on the passenger side wheel well and work from there to remove and replace the belt. Am I wrong? I plan to replace it with my brother in law next Saturday.

^Nah, don't even need to do that. Just use a 19mm socket and a breaker bar and have someone pull on the tensioner bolt while you work from the wheel well.

Well me and my brother in law just opened the hood and thought that would be the way to do it. Where would the tensioner be, in the wheel well too? Does anyone have any pics so i'm sure?

Isn't it the same as the alternator belt on the 5s-fe? We looked in the Haynes manual but can't find shit.

The 5S-Fe has two belts, not counting the timing belt, IIRC. The 2AZ-FE only has one.

Yeah your right, I'm tired don't mind me. So using the diagram you posted, i'll pretty much just loosen it with the 19mm socket and a breaker bar and change belt?

You don't loosen anything. You just pull on the tensioner to release the tension from the belt long enough to remove and install the belt. The tensioner will be pulling against you and spring back if you let go.

I guess if you are asking how to do this, you won't do this, but I have to say it:
Don't just let go of the tensioner once you remove or install the belt. There is quite a bit of force behind it and it can cause damage and injuries.

Sorry, but I live with a lot of dumb people here...ever seen someone start a fire with a microwave and Pop-tarts? I can assure you that the 200 people, myself included, who had to evacuate the building at 1230am in their PJs or shorts and t-shirts, to the parking lot where it was 25 degrees before the wind chill from 30 MPH winds were not happy campers.

Around 30k I had to replace mine. It would squeak all the time...You can notice the difference when you do get it replaced...This was a TSB report!
