5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The warm weather is finally here again and hopefully for g00d this time but becuase of it i use my AC but when i do it seems like my car loses power it has any1 else experience this???? i have a I4
The A/C uses horsepower from the engine. I have heard people say the average A/C unit takes about 15 horsepower to run. I'm not certain of the exact amount of HP the 07 Camry A/C system takes to run, but it does take that HP from the engine. Hence, there is less HP available to make it to the front wheels and you feel the difference in acceleration.
I've only noticed a slight difference in power with my A/C on. To me, it's more noticeable on small cars like the Corolla. Though.. I never really tested the Corolla with the A/C off. All I know is that when I test drove the '07 Corolla S, I panicked because the car felt like it wasn't moving! The '07 Camry SE I4 felt worlds better.

AC compressor is belt driven... AC definitely robs the engine of "power". It's more noticeable in 4's than 6's and 8's, but all engines suffer from loss of power when AC is on.

It's even more noticeable when your car is fully loaded with 4 adults. We were out for a lunch and I volunteered to drive. A Camry I4 + AC + 4 people = Corolla !!!!!!!!!

Hello, 2007 Camry V6 LE here and from what I've noticed is that running the A/C definitely reduces the engine output by a noticeable amount. I've driven a lot of other cars, but never one that saps this much power when running the A/C.
Most noticeable when accelerating from a stop, HUGE difference with A/C on vs A/C off. On the freeway, not so much "noticeable" difference but it's there.
On the other hand, it does cool nicely....maybe the 07 has a "larger" A/C unit compared to "older" cars which robs the engine of power? I had an 01 Camry V6 before and there was some power loss with A/C on, but not as large a gap as the 07 V6 with A/C.

Don't ever say your Camry is like a Corolla! Ha ha ha
But I know what you mean. I drove my aunt's '05 Avalon and with FIVE people in the car and it felt like the car was empty . I thought that was awesome.
