5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
On my 2003 Camry, there is a some freeplay between the time I step on the brake pedal and when I feel the brakes start kicking in. How much freeplay should there be? I am taking my car into the dealer for service for its 60,000 mile checkup, although it has over 73,000 miles on it, and I am thinking about asking them to check the freeplay. I don't know if any of you owners out there so this, but if I pump the brake pedal when the car is off, the pedal gets to be real tight. Is that how it is supposed to be all the time? By the way my car has the regular disc/drum brakes, not ABS. Thought I would just pass that along.
Sounds like mine. My '02 has been like that since I got it. About an inch or so of free play before the brake kicks in. I'm going to be changing my brake shoes in the rear sometime soon, so maybe that'll help... but otherwise, I'd say its normal.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
Adjust the rear shoes, That will cause the low pedal/too much "freeplay" issue, If it is rear drum equipped

My two biggest gripes for the camry are the brakes and the seats. the braking system sucks, and the seats are uncomforatble. but hey, you cannt have it all in this life.
