5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just got done doing a timing belt change on my brothers 2001 VW Jetta, it was pretty fun figuring out how to get the side engine mount off the case, took about 10 hours total but that was only because I have never done it before, then we found a place that works on Euros and they said they would have only charged 2.5 hours labor so hind sight says buy the parts and find someone else to do it, espacially if they guarentee the work. All in all it was definately an experience. Replaced the water pump (which created the issue in the first place, but since he was close to 60K it was time for the timing belt), belt tensioner, motor mount bolts, and balancer. Not really related to the Camry at all but I just wanted to share.
Now can you tell me if the 2gr-fe v6 engine is an interference or non-interference type
Since there isn't a belt, it's a non-issue. My 1983 Toyota pickup - 22RE motor had over 300K on it when I sold it. Original timing chain and tensioner. The only thing you have to do to keep a chain running forever is:
- change oil/filter regularly
- drive in a semi-sane manner.
Hi Mike, thanks for the quick reply... I feel better knowing that it is a chain and it may be a non issue for a toyota engine but don't try telling that to owners of the ford 4.6 liter engine that came out in 1995.
they replaced the fragile belt with a chain on the 2007 but screwed up the rest of the car to more than compensate and ensure owner headaches - just read the posts here. Corps Muckity mucks must be tarred and feathered

You've posted a lot here, you should know better then to post in an old thread after the solution has been solved.

Ford 4.6 Liter engine may have had problems when It came out. But for the past Three years, it is one of the best engines. It has been listed in The Ward 's 10 Best engines as one of the best engines ahead of Toyota's engines.
