5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Im not sure whether the Gen6 V6 has a chain or belt. Some people on the forum have said it's a chain, while people at the Toyota dealership said it's a belt. Does anyone have actual proof that it's a chain/belt, like a Haynes manual?

Ok, so I wouldnt need to make sure the timing belt (since there isnt one) gets chagned at around 90K miles, which is good since it's pretty expensive, lol.
Exactly, Timing Chain will never have to be serviced. Unless something terrible goes wrong and it breaks... Very unlikely, Maybe at 500k

Thats why I was confused, because they said the I4 was a belt, but people here said it was a chain. And since it has the same engine as the Gen5 I4, I thought it was a belt, but now that I saw some proof, im happy

The tensioner can go bad a lot sooner than that, necessitating a full timing chain service to correct the problem. Chains are a lot harder to change than belts since they are lubricated by motor oil.

How often would that happen? Hopefully not within the same range as a timing belt...
