"L" Gear.

When I was riding today, I had my dog in the back. He jumped up front, and hit the gear shift in to "L" and my car just stopped, and made this high rev noise. It sounded like CVT. I got back home, I put it into L again, and it did the same thing. I was scared to go over 20, because I didn't want to blow up the engine. Is this normal?

um...L is the lowest gear i think? i cant remember but how fast were you going when he did this ...and going from D to L dont you have to press the button and go from D->2->L ? anyways you went to a lower gear

I didn't think the transmission would downshift if it was going too fast. They generally have some protections built in, or at least I thought so. I'd tgake it in to the dealer and have them check it, and probably not say a whole lot about the puppy.

The dog pushed the shifter into "L" as in D-4-3-2-L, right? L is just the first gear, so if you were going anything higher than 40km/h then the transmission wouldn't have gone all the way down to 1st gear. The high revs would be because the tranny downshifted to the lowest possible gear without redlining. The car just "stopped" but does this mean that all wheels locked up and you stopped completely and rapidly or does that mean that the engine shut off? The transmission doesn't downshift beyond the redline, so I wouldn't be too worried about the engine.

You may want to try shifting through the first couple of gears from a full stop to get a feel for the gears. From a full stop, shift into L and then start driving. keep an eye on the tachometer and accelerate lightly to about 3000rpm then shift into 2. If the transmission switches into 2nd gear the rpms will go down to somewhere between 1000-2000rpm.

What you've described sounds pretty normal to me except for the part where you say "and my car just stopped". Hope this helps and I hope your car's alright.

ps. It's a good thing your dog's alright too. When I started reading this thread I saw the title "Why?" and thought your dog jumped in front and then jumped out the window!

Why can't you make a more descriptive title?

Why must you choose a vauge title so people who do search won't bother looking at this thread?

Why?

It happens, either it can downshift or shift to neutral with a slight tap while in D. You can shift it back to D or pull over and shift it to D. No need to leave it on L since driving with one gear continuously is bad.

L = First gear. It won't upshift to second gear.

If you can drive it around in D normally, then you should be fine.
