5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently purchased a 2007 I4 Camry for my wife. Her pervious car was a 2000 4 cylinder Camry. I stopped back at the dealer to ask about excessive engine noise at idle and was told this is common as the Camry of old had a timing belt but the new engine has a timing chain. Has anyone else on this forum voiced a concern about this with a dealer?

How many miles you have on the car?
I have a 2007 I4 also and it's smooth as it can be even at Idle. Mines now has about 900 miles.
No problems thus far except the original dealer had to make 2 Master keys since they couldn't find the originals when they sold them to me.

have you listened to other 07 I4's to compare? that would be the first thing i would do.... then if there is a huge difference in valve train noise.... take it back in know this. the noise your referring too... is when hot? or cold? at idle.
chain to belt shouldn't have any impact on valve train noise.... that person at the dealership is feeding you false info.
Thanks for all the replies. Our Camry has 1600 miles and yes I did in fact go back to the dealer to listen to other Camrys. Once at operating temperature is where it is most noticeable. The service manager and mechanic who listened to the engine both think this noise is due to the timing chain. The noise has more of a deep sound versus valve clatter. Once past 1000 rpm no knocks or clatter just a smooth running engine. This is just a concern of mine as all of my past Toyota vehicles have performed flawlessly with very little engine noise. I think I'll try another dealer out of curiosity.

2AZ-FE motors are noisy! The chain and the VVTi make it that way.
Hell, mines noisy. That's the way all of them are.
I had address that complaint CONSTANTLY at the dealer. It did not stop me from buying one.
You can waste your time trying to get it fixed but if they say it's normal, it's NORMAL.
Before I bought my Camry one tech even told me specifically that he didn't like how noisy the engines got after they had some miles on them. Yippy skippy. I've got more important things in life to worry about than trying to get an engine more quiet at idle that I can't hear while I'm driving.
i would agree, the 4cyl toyota motors are not the quietest out there by any means, this is my 3rd and newest gen camry, all 4 cyl and this is probably the loudest, I think the old 5sfe in my gen 3 and 4 was actually a quieter running motor, but i like the economy of the newer motor over the last gens.

I have to agree. I too have had gen 3 and 4 Camrys and now have a generation 6. All have been 4 cylinders. The gen 6 2AZ 4 cylinder engine is louder. I chalk this up to the use of a metal timing chain now instead of a rubber timing belt.

Maybe it will be some quieter when it is broken in? A diesel engine is noisy too, but most of them can last 200,000 miles with ease - i do know that a noisy engine does creep me out even if i know there's nothing wrong with it. It makes me want to change the oil or something. But my 1988 Nissan pickup has had a valve tick since i've owned it and it has 300,000 miles on it, still passes smog and runs strong.

They get a little louder. It's worse when the engine is cold.
I think the 2AZ is quiet! Even when I used dino oil it was smooth/quiet - now that I've got full synthetic, it's even better. It's funny when I'm behind a pedestrian on a narrow street so I have to wait behind until I can get by.. I can be behind a person for a good 30 seconds before they'll notice me - they just can't hear the car running!
My mom's 1MZ is the same. But all you gotta do is step on the brakes and the loud squeal will make them know you're behind them
