Gen5 Recommended Shocks & Struts?

Have any of the Gen 5 owners here replaced their suspension and if so, is there a particular brand/model of shocks and struts that you recommend?

At 69 000 kilometers my stock suspension is totally gone. I guess it just couldn't handle the demands of a taxi...

I know anyone here who has replaced their suspension has probably done it for sport tuning purposes and not for taxi purposes, but any knowledge/opinions are appreciated.

thanks guys....

plenty of ppl have upgraded their suspension.. i believe there is the TRD spirngs(rebadged eibachs), tein s techs(i think).. for shocks, i think everyone has said that the only decent replacement is the KYB GR-2 shocks which arent too far from stock.. wait for other ppl to chime in, im not totally sure on everything

^They are. KYB GR-2 are stock replacement struts. They are NOT warranted for cars that are lowered more than 1". So I sit here patiently waiting for maybe Tokico or Koni or someone to release a good performance strut. In the meantime, after 20k miles of being lowered on stock struts, I still stand by my statement that lowering on stock struts WILL NOT blow your struts unless you drive like an idiot.

hey what spring are you using, and how is the ride with the stock struts? I was contemplating the same move as well

I'm riding on Tein S. Techs. 1.7"F/1.5" rear drop. Honestly, the ride is pretty good. I can't complain. Compared to stock? I really couldn't tell you... I've been lowered for a year and a half now... haha. I can hardly remember what stock feels like. But from what I remember, it wasn't really that much difference. Noticeable, yes. Anything to worry about? Nah.

yeah, comfort is pretty good, nothing to worry about. But it also slightly depends on your tire size. I had 17/215/45 before but now with 17/215/50s, it feels smoother. I road in my friend's integ (lowered on tein coilovers and 17/215/40) and that felt lot harsher than my car ever was. been on stock struts for over 20,000 miles and still going fine.

TO the poster...shocks and struts are defined differently. Our car uses struts. I've had mine lowered for like 6 months now...and no complaints from that department. IN all hoensty, i would like to lower more. As for there being a strut out, i know for a fact that there is the kyb like everyone else said...but some part of me wants to say there was a monroe sensatrac as well.

Well, whoever finds a performance strut, if they ever get made, please let us all know as I wouldnt mind a bit stiffer, less strut travel ride.

Be careful what you ask for. Stiff shocks can wear your back and car out. If you want your car to ride like a brick, buy Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable and you can have it. I prefer KYB GR-2 for most of my cars because they provide close to stock performance, maybe a tad stiffer. Unless you're autocrossing or racing, you don't need that much stiffness. Put heavier anti-sway bars on, but be careful there too as they will eventually affect the ride the thicker they are. Remember street cars and track cars are different, and I've seen many over mod their suspension because track cars seem cool, till you hit the first pothole.

^There are NO performance struts made for the Gen 5. ONLY the KYB GR-2 are available as an aftermarket replacement (there's also a Monroe strut, but eh..)

would you guys be able to help me out? i'm finally getting a set of S. Techs and was thinking abt lowering my offset to get a wider stance on the car.

would this be recommended? would there be rubbing issues? i think offset for stock gen 5 is around +48? i might be wrong. Any help is appreciated.

I got my S. Techs on ebay, but I got lucky. The reason is 'cause when I got them, thats when all the counterfeit fake Teins started popping up on ebay, and I just so happened to buy my S. Techs from a reputable Tein dealer, so I lucked out.

As far as the grill, its impossible to get now. The grill has been out of production for a while now, and mine was one of the last ones ever made. I believe poohbear just picked up the very last one in Australia (which is the only place they were ever made). There is a replica out, but the quality isn't as good. The Sportivo is fiberglass and has a Toyota part number. The replica is hollow plastic.

The stock offset on a Gen 5 is +50. Thats the only reason that my IS300 wheels even fit, and even then, just barely clear my struts.

You should be fine with a lower offset, but you might want to get stretched sidewall tires. If you go with a lower offset, you may get some rubbing during suspension travel.
