5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 07 V6 XLE. Whenever I fill my tank with 87 or 89 octane my car jerks and it almost seems like the transmission flares when I hit the gas. However when I fill 91 octane it seems as if the problem goes away and the car rides smooth. Any suggestions?

Hmmmm... I use 89 mostly and sometimes 87 if I know I'm going on a long drive, rarely 91 and have no issues.
Are you using the 87/89 gas from the same gas station or different one's?
It's possible you may have gotten a bad batch of gas.
I started to notice the problem about 2 months ago. I usually always fill up at Quick Trip. I'm up to about 14,000 miles on it.
how about trying the following:
run the car down to 1/4 tank (if you have 91 in there and it's fine now)
fill up with 87 or 89 at another gas station - use a toptier retailer... http://www.toptiergas.com/
if it's doing the same... I'd take the car in as it has nothing to do with the gas octane.

Kind of sounds like the problem that i'm having with mine, but it's an '02 SE V6. I posted a thread with my problems, check it out..
I never thought about the gas i use.. i should look into that more. I also thought it was my tranny, but Toyota swears it isn't. That's probably because they know i still have powertrain warrenty and they don't want to honour it until it's out in 2 years *rollseyes*

I agree. I only use 87 and my car runs fine - minus the tranny issues.

According to this list from toptiergas.com, I don't see Mobil. Is this to say, Mobil is not a good gasoline...? because I usually go with Shell then Mobil is my 2nd choice. What do you think?

I've read post after post form people and their woes with the 2007 Camry. Transmissiion hesitation, "throttle-by-wire" problems, clunking sound thats normal. I'm not being flippant at all when i say what i would do, i'd take my lumps and trade it in for an 2006, or an altima, or an accord. Or wait til the 2009's when they might be decent again. I love my 2002 V6 but the lustre is off Toyota, for me - i'll drive it til the wheels fall off and if i consider toyota again, i will do my research first. And the 2007's are definitely OUT.

I knew what I was getting into with a first year car. Again, the V6 tranny issues is a very small %. The issue does suck and I feel for the people with it.
Knock on wood mine has been fine going on 16k. May 06 build with no tranny flares etc. Couple times a week I try to make it flare with no luck so far.
Back to the original thread.... for some reason the original posters issue doesn't sound like a mechanical tranny issue.
If you are going to try the different gas station test.. report back so we are in the loop. And of course if you have to take it in to the dealer, would be curious on what the exact issue is and the fix.

I wouldn't say Mobil is not good gas... it just doesn't adhere to the Top Tier detergent standards. When I first heard about Top Tier gas.. the list was much smaller. Guess a lot of gas companies are joing the list.
It's funny that.... German, American and Japanese manufacturers can all agree on one thing...
