5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Toyota just released a new TSB (TC007-07) for the infamous U660E transmission to correct the flare (slipping) problem. This is, of course, applicable only to the V6 Camry (and Lexus ES350).
The TSB calls for reflashing the transmission computer with new firmware to fix the problem. It also states that if the new firmware doesn't do the trick, the transaxle needs to be replaced (of course, that was in the older TSBs, and didn't solve my problem nor that of numerous other posters).
My conclusion is that they identified two problems with the transmission: one mechanical and one related to programming. The mechanical one was identified months back when they released the valve body replacement TSB and the subsequent R/R transaxle TSB. The firmware update is what's new this time.
What's interesting is that the list of flares the TSB is supposed to fix involves more than just the 3-4 shift flare that's so obvious. Other shift flares that I see mentioned less on discussion boards (with the exception of Edmunds, which has a number of complaints about these) were listed. Also, the TSB says the flares are most noticeable after a cold soak, implying they can occur when the car is warmed up (something many of us already knew from experience).
* 3-4 upshift during first 10 minutes of operation
* 2nd - 3rd upshift
* 4th - 5th upshift
* 5th - 4th downshift when accelerating from coast or decelerating between 30 - 40 mph
Note that the last one may be related to the odd engine braking effect this transmission has.
Let's hope this fixes the problem in these expensive cars.
-Doug

Ha! I called for a reflash last October, confused as to why this option wasn't even being discussed I moved into the mechanical aspect of the problem... It now appears both mechanical and electrical gremlins exist? I wonder if this change wont upset more folks if the car really starts to shift poorly or already poor fuel mileage gets worse?
Whatever the case, hopefully they're zeroing in on the true problem and they correct new models... Cars that have been on the road for the past year? We'll see in a few years how many have already been damaged beyond the repairs this TSB calls for.

Already poor mileage???? Mine has been great in my SE V6 with my heavier than most foot on the accelerator. Is there a widespread issue with V6 mileage in these cars?

I dunno... But IME the TL will crack 30MPG... The Camry has a hard time cracking 20MPG.
What's even more confounding is the TL needs to work harder, Honda's simply don't deliver torque the way Toyotas do. So being a higher reving engine, I'd have thought the TL would do worse. Same driving conditions and same driver, the buzzing around town part I was an average of 17-18MPG on my Camry whereas the Honda gets a solid 24-25MPG.
I've stated many times before my disappointment in the V6 Camry's mileage and that was before I got the Honda... It was difficult to accept the Camry as only doing a few MPG better than my Sequoia.

It's like you had a different car than me. I get 24-26 mpg in my DC rush hour traffic 42 mile door to door commute and a solid 31.5+ anytime I can drive a distance on the highway averaging 65+mph.
I have never, NEVER, EVER had less than 22 mpg in my Camry and that was 4+ hours sitting in accident traffic on Thanksgiving weekend.

Yeah I agree 22mpg after sitting in 4+ hours of traffic is amazing. I am not doubting you but I can only get 20+ mpg if I absolutely feather the gas, and why do that. I got the V6 for a reason.

I called 4 dealers before I found one guy who said he had the TSB. He might have been lying to me even with that, but insisted they would need to have the car over night and still replicate the problem before applying any reprogamming.

"People who think they know it all are particularly irritating to those of us who do."
2. My V6 XLE gets a steady 25-26 MPG in everyday driving, that includes a daily 88 mile home-work-home commute, only 1/3 of which is highway driving.
My display is always set to my MPG readout and I've learned to be less of a lead foot by watching it.
What date was this released? I had my tranny replaced a couple weeks ago and I still have an occasional flare although the transmisison is much improved over the original one. What concerns me most now is my transmission is still frequently extremely slow to downshift. Sometimes I floor it from 5th or 6th and it will find 2nd and take off immediately. Other times it will hesitate, go briefly to 4th, then 3rd and then finally hit 2nd. The entire process of fully downshifting takes about 4-5 seconds which is a lifetime when you're trying to cut & thrust in traffic!!!
WHY IS NO ONE JUMPING FOR JOY of this news.. or is SOMEONE playing a SICK joke..
At least one thing that is good.. is if this is true, toyota is acknowledging the problem and it is not a NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC.... please someone post the TSB... PLEASE..
