steering - auto centering torque

On my gen 5 (XLE, 4 cyl). I notice that the springness of the steering wheel to return back to the straight ahead position is less. (like when I make a u turn)

In my older taurus, the steering was tighter and also sprung back to the center a lot quicker...

I don't seems to have any alignment issues. So wondering if that is how the Gen 5 steering is. ?

I drove a freinds Gen4 and that steering had more springiness and when making a lock to lock turn (like a U), returned to the center much quicker.


I believe that this tendency of the wheel to return to center is called auto centering torque

It's either something in the steering/suspension is binding or you need an alignment.

I doubt it's alignment. I'm pretty sure caster isn't even adjustable.

ok thx.

I guess have no choice but to pay the deler for their diagnosis.

might jsut ignore it, it just that its not as springy as my taurus used to be. May be i'll try to drive another gen 5 xle if I can find a one and compare
