5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok, this just recently started to happen. the 1st 2 times, I thought it was my imagination. This time I tested it, and it happened.
When the car has a cold start,a nd is put in gear, about 10s later, there is a surge.
what happened tonight, is the car wa outside, so I needed to bring it into the garage. So I started it, put it in gear, and pulled in, and then slowly inched my way in to the back. All of a sudden, there was a slight surge where it was like there was an instant 500rpm increase. LUCKILY, I was ready, and had my foot planted on the brake. This crap ain't normal. Worst tranny I have ever driven.
Any thoughts?

I know what you mean.. It's not the initial gear selection when it's cold, it's AFTER. My tranny does that once in a while even when it's at operating temp. I've found it happens more often (if not exclusively) with the A/C on. Did you have the A/C or heater on by any chance?
I sometimes wish I had a 4 speed auto. My mom's car still shifts smoother than my car despite being 10 years older than mine. It's not my car either because my aunt's 2005 Avalon with the 2GR and same tranny exhibit the same annoyances. The one redeeming factor of the quirky 5 speed auto is its low freeeway cruising RPM. Keeps engine noise down and fuel economy up.
BTW, what's the build date on your mom's Camry? Mine is 11/04 I think. My other friend with a gen 5.5 2AZ has a build date of 6/2005 and its tranny is smoother.

Not sure on the AC/Heat. I'll cheak in the morning.
For the build date, it IS in '04. Got the car in Nov. Again, I'll check on that. I'm going to ask the dealer when I go tomorrow if there is a reprogram for the tranny. My friend's ;07 2GR is getting reprogramed this week. I'll keep you posted.

Mine goes in tomorrow for the same problem, they reflashed it the first time a few months ago. but the problem is still there. I'm trying to get it all fixed while i still have my used car warrenty!
Do this: Get in your car and start it up. Now turn the steering wheel. Notice that the RPM's will go up in response to the power steering pressure increasing.
No turn on the A/C. Notice that the RPM's will fluctuate as the compressor engages and disengages.
These things also happen if you do it while the car is in gear.
I feel it at stoplights and stopsigns all the time.

NORMAL.
mine stops jerking or hesitating when the AC is on your there's a load on the engine. when no fans are on and i slowly accellerate it jerks and the RPM's go down. It goes in tomorrow..so we'll see. I told them they better find away to fix it under warrenty cause i'm not paying them again! that and i can't afford to pay them this month..

The wheel was not being turned, car was straight. HVAC was off. And no, a surge forward is NOT NORMAL.

^ Take the valve off and clean it. It's probably just sticking due to carbon buildup.
The diaghram may have failed but you describe it as an intermittent problem. If that's the case, cleaning it (and the port if possible) may very well fix your problem. If the diaghram was ruptured you would have the problem all the time.
