5th & 6th Generation (2002-2006 & 2007-2011)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 2002-2006 & 2007-2011
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have an issue with the factory sunroof in my 2007 Camry. When I press the up side of the tilt switch the sunroof goes up and stops at its limit even when holding the switch. This is as I would expect. The problem is, when you select the tilt down side of the tilt switch, the sunroof comes down but will go back up if you don't let go of the switch. It makes it hard to know you have it fully closed when working this way. If it was suppose to work this way then why have an up and down on the switch.
I was told by someone at the dealer over the weekend to contact my salesman about it because he would know if it was suppose to work this way. I called the salesman today to ask if he could check another car on the lot to see if it works like this also. You would have thought I was asking him to give up his first born. He finally just wouldn't say he wasn't going to check it out on another car and said it was suppose to work that way. I won't be buying a car from this place again.
Anyway, I was wondering if others with factory sunroofs see this working this way. The retract back and forth works as it is suppose to. It's the tilt up/down that is messed up in my opinion on this car. Maybe all. I don't know. I'd like more information before going to the dealer and asking to have it fixed or contacting Toyota directly.
On my Camry. Tilt up goes up, and tilt down goes down, and if it is all the way down already, it wont go back up. That seems messed up. Its like you said how can u tell if it is closed all the way? Yeah I am pretty certain on mine up is up and down is down, only.

i dont have an 07 but an 05, but from what you are saying, we have the same features on our sunroofs.. and in fact, that does not sound normal.. to vent, u would push the button closest to the front. once it is open all the way, it stops. to close, push the button towards the back. once it is closed, it will stop. and to open fully, hold button towards the back for 1 sec and its auto.

Thanks in advance to anyone who checks this out.
Here is what you do, hold the tilt DOWN for about 3 seconds may 5 secs and push the up tilt it should work normal now. When I my got Camry it did the same thing. Its part of the PDI process when new Camrys come in. Hope that helps.

This bulletin contains moon roof initialization procedures for 2007 model year Camry vehicles. In the event that a new moon roof housing assembly has been installed or an existing moon roof glass assembly has been reinstalled/adjusted, perform one of the following initialization procedures.

I tried your link and it says I have to have some subscription. Thanks for trying though. I'll try the other suggestions when the wife gets home with the car.

Don't want to subscribe to stay up to date, try using the search function.
same thing on our camry...i was like wtf getting pissed but when i finally got it to close correctly i left it like that...like 2 days later i tried again and it worked fine
Sorry. I tried the search function yesterday using "sunroof" instead of "moonroof" and it didn't come up. I used "moonroof" today and saw the post earlier you link to above. I'm going to try it when the wife gets back with the car.
Last time anybody I knew with a car with a window in the roof, it was called a sunroof. I do recall hearing moonroof used at some point I guess. I'm sorry I didn't think to use moonroof yesterday when searching BEFORE I posted.
I really just wanted to know if others "roof windows" functioned this way because the jack*** salesman I bought the car from didn't want to check into it for me even though his jack*** boss told me to call him and ask him about it. He eventually said this was the way it's suppose to work. This is another reason why he is a jack*** besides the fact he is either a liar or stupid.
I may subscribe at a later date to the other forum. I'm new to Toyota ownership and so far the whole thing hasn't been good as far as the dealer went. The car seems ok for the first month other than the sunroof\moonroof thing. I hope to have the same experience most others have had with their Camry over the next few years.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
Right On!
Just a glitch, never had that problem or any other on mine.
Thanks to all that posted! I followed the instructions from the other thread and it works correctly now.
1. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
2. To normalize the moon roof, push and hold the moon roof switch on the “TILT UP” side until the roof fully tilts up.
3. Then release the switch.
4. Push and hold the switch on the “TILT UP” side until the moon roof tilts up, tilts down, slides open and then closes automatically.
NOTE: On the second "Push and hold the switch on the "Tilt UP" side" it took about 10-20 seconds before the intialization procedure started (tilt down, open, close)

This just proves what liars dealers and their service departments are. This could have been explained over the phone in less than 1 minute and saved me a trip and wait time for a simple fix. I'll be giving my salesman a call back.
This is great news. I too thought I had a crazy sunroof whose behavior matches exactly what is described here.
I thought my moonroof was a lemon because on only my fourth day of ownership, about 8pm Saturday, the jam protection failed while the moonroof was sliding forward. The motor whined a bit so I glanced up (all happened while driving) to see the moonroof torque slightly in the track about an inch away from being fully closed. I heard a pop as the moonroof stopped in the track before returning to fully open.
Subsequent attempts to close the unit cause the moonroof to slide forward about six inches, pause, and then pull back to full open. I examined the spot on the track where the moonroof stalls and recovered a small piece of ABS plastic amidst the lubricant.
Service department confirmed the piece I recovered is part of the assembly. Unfortunately "there are only five replacement units in the country" so I'm in a loaner for a few days. The loaner is appreciated, but its an I-4 LE with cloth seaths and old school keys. I miss my v6 XLE with leather seats, XM, and Smart Key.
