just wondering for those who have the basic non jbl audio system on their cam... how bad are the stock speakers? i don't really have the funds to spring for new speakers but i intend on getting navi on my system and wonder if i could wait off on changing the speakers... thanks!
I'm not an audio guy by any means but I'll take a stab here. The stock speakers seem pretty good to me. I get some background static on CDs and MP3 when the volume is up- I'd say above 45 or so. The CD/MP3 volume must be turned up approx 15 "notches" higher to be equal to the radio volume output. (this might be normal on all cars and have nothing to do with the speakers?)
You don't realize how bad they are until you upgraded them.
I upgraded my to all 4 6x9 JBL speakers. The stock are no more than paper speakers. The magnet under the cone is a size of a quarter. As you know, the great speakers usually has a really big magnet with them. And the cone of stock speaker is just like paper.
I upgraded 2 in the rear first then I use the fader control to hear the different between stock and JBL speakers. They are Day and Night. I am glad that I upgraded the rear and front door speakers. The front door speakers need an adapter/spacer for the JBL speaker to fit because the JBL is a lot deeper.

Back on stock height and love it!
the stock speakers are pretty bad.. i am in the process of dynamating and replacing the speakers with polk. the oem apeakers are cheap and light, although save them - i used them for speaker adapters by removing the speaker guts and cutting the basket to fit the new polk speakers.
replacing the headunit isn't a pain.. i actually like the glow and other motorist would pull up next to me and it catches their attention. i haven't replaced mine yet, but in the future.
I bought some 6x9s and i dont have the jbl speakers neither, how did you manage to fit the 6x9s? or did u make a kit?

I have the JBL Stereo and its the damn vibrations/ rattles that annoy me. I'm going to dynamat and do speakers too. I might go 6.5 components up front, 6x9 in the back. Sadly,t he 6x9's I'd love to have are not available anymore...Polk EX 6x9's.
I have a gen 5.5 camry and want to upgrade the head unit since I'd like to add a sub to it but so far I can't find a head would fit nicely to the dash.
Anybody think I can just add sub to the head w/o replacing it with an after market head.
you can but its no point.. you wont get the wattage you want from the deck, and its a harder process. although i've seen some kits on crutchfield that'll allow you to do that.. its not worth it..
for anyone interested. i have a alpine type r woofer, with the box, and amp to push it.. 450obo. i also have a pioneer deck will post pix tonite.
The non-JBL headunit on the Gen 6 sounds horrible and I'm by no means an audiophile. I never really liked the way it sounded on radio, cd, or mp3. I installed a Pioneer Nav and it made a WORLD of difference, even with stock speakers. Now it sounds decent enough for me.
